Chapter 7 — South India: The First Roots, the Blade That Would Not Be Bought, and the Demon the God Was Born to Slay

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (golden re-enrichment of the v2.4 build), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack and the ENRICHMENT_PROPOSAL restoration. Standard-care chapter (CVD §6.2); the §17.1 hard lines bind, and the living Tamil and Malayali traditions are represented with weight and as they understand themselves — the malevolent asuras of the Tamil Murugan war-cycle restored as the tradition's OWN condemned demons (Surapadman and his brothers Tarakan and Singamukhan, whose slaying in the Soorasamharam is the reason for Murugan's very existence; plus the pey/bhutam malevolent-spirit register), faced as the demon-war the tradition itself commemorates; the god Murugan and the goddess Meenakshi honored and inviolate, never targets; the main fight an honorable integrity-testing duel with Raghavendra (an uncorrupted enforcer, never a killing); the Siddha, Kalaripayattu, Ayurvedic, and wootz-steel traditions honored as builders-of-knowledge; the temple guarded not desecrated. Reveal-timing note — no House-of-Velheim name/family/pattern (Raghavendra is UNAWARE that he stands inside a corrupt structure; the family first appears at Ch 8, one chapter on); the Grand Sage is dark; the Sealed Letter's fairy-realm script is deliberately NOT identified before the Ch 8 reveal; the substrate-perception onset stays far ahead at the Ch 15 Adeptus-Minor Inscription crossing (HL_0028). Drafted is not canonical.

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 7 start state = Ch 6 end state)

Ch 7 opens from Ch 6's committed end state [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_06]: a young elven child (Childhood; internal age 10); no companions; Shell the Water familiar sustained, Kira the Bali Starling (F1), Khan the Sumatran Tiger (G1), and Muthu the Sri Lankan Elephant (G2) bonded, the Sanur Octopus (W4) deferred and gated; the Child Familiar still lost and believed dead (Ch 58 reveal); no home; concealment at ACTIVE_CONCEALMENT; the healer's-child mystery active; the Vimana precursor seed set at Ch 6 and the Ayurvedic-origin substrate seeded there; the paths carrying direction plus magnitude near the L3 band (WS3 Neutral; the band itself is L3 Drifting per the v3 two-axis vocabulary) [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child]. Ch 7 gives the protagonist their first rootedness in the mortal world and their first honest mirror.

Body prose

South India is the first place the protagonist puts down roots. They come up out of the Tamil country into Madurai, a temple-city built in rings around a goddess, and pass in through a gate the stone door-guardians watch — honored ground, entered in the right bearing, never taken. And in the streets around the great temple two crafts take them in: a forge where a smith folds a crucible steel the whole world will trade for, and a healer's room where leaf and mineral are ground to cure. For the first time since the cave there are doors that will open to them again, benches that are theirs to return to. It is not a family and not a home exactly, but it is the first rootedness, and the protagonist is surprised by how much they want it.

Before they turn for the coast the smith sends them north to Thanjavur with a billet to deliver, and there the protagonist stands under a thing they will not forget: a Chola temple-tower of dressed granite, and at its summit a single crowning stone hauled the whole height of the sky and set without mortar, the proportion of it a puzzle the eye keeps solving. Here too a carved door-guardian holds the threshold, and only a step made in right bearing wins the inner court. The wootz the forge folds runs this same road on north — up to the Deccan fortress-markets where diamonds and crucible-steel ingots are weighed on one scale and carried west toward Persia.

From the temple-city they cross west into Kerala, down into a sunken-floor pit where a martial tradition is taught as a sacred art, and here the chapter's fight finds them — unlike any before it, because for once the one across from them is not corrupt. The pit is not a place they pass through but a school they enter, and the guru grades them up through it rung by rung — first the body made ready in the standing forms and the animal postures, then the wooden weapons, the long staff and the curved otta, then the blade, the kattari and the whip-thin urumi that folds like cloth and cuts like water. Each rung is won and not given, staked in scored sparring bouts against the pit's ranked students, and no bout is a brawl: a strike counts only where the form allows it, a clean touch to a marma line ends the round, and the guru calls the count aloud so the whole pit hears where the protagonist stands. Velli Amma, rare among the pit's women for how far she has climbed, spars them to the edge of what they know and will not flatter a sloppy point. Above the three open grades sits a fourth the guru names only once — Marmakkalai, the mastery of the hidden points — a gate no student crosses on skill alone, opened only to the one whose bearing the guru trusts to hold both edges of the knowledge. An enforcer trained to the secret fourth level of the art, to a mastery of the body's hundred and seven hidden points, crosses blades with the protagonist — not out of malice, but because in his tradition a stranger's worth is tested edge to edge. He reads them the way the protagonist has learned to read others, and what he weighs is not their skill but their integrity. It is the first time someone has looked straight at what the protagonist is becoming and measured it without fear and without hunger. Here too the protagonist learns that the force the world half-remembers has a map in the flesh — a hundred and seven points where the vital current can be mended or stopped — and that the same knowledge heals and kills; the tradition holds both in one hand and asks which the protagonist will be. That question wears a face soon enough: a healer who turned the map to murder, the dark mirror of the art the enforcer keeps clean.

North again, into the hills, the protagonist climbs one of the six sacred abodes of a war-god — and learns why a war-god is needed at all. The tradition remembers a demon who oppressed the world until the god was born expressly to end him; the god struck him with a spear, and the demon, splitting as he fell, became the peacock the god rides and the bird on his banner. On the abode-hill that memory is not only carved but near enough to touch, and a manifestation of that old demon still stirs against any who climb in the wrong spirit. The protagonist faces it the way the tradition itself faces it — not a slaying of anything sacred, but the demon the whole cycle exists to put down — and at the summit a peacock, the very sign of that ancient defeat, takes their measure and will one day fly with them, when they have climbed high enough inside to deserve it.

The paths diverge in the duel and in the demon both. On the good path the protagonist fights honestly and earns the enforcer's respect, and perhaps an ally no coin can buy, and faces the old demon in the tradition's own honest spirit; on the corrosive path they fight to win at any cost and show a hollowness the honorable man will not follow into. And somewhere in these same hills is a tradition the corruption has never managed to touch — the deathless masters, scattered, un-owned, said to live on in hidden places — and though the protagonist cannot yet say why, the bare fact that such a thing exists steadies them, like a light held far off across dark water. Before they take the coast road east, a kalari master presses a sealed letter into their hand, its writing in no script the protagonist can read, and asks them to carry it and not to open it; and they do.

Threads advancing (T0_Thread_Grid, 18 cells)

Mirrored to the canonical Thread grid (per-thread rows keyed THREAD_NN) and the per-chapter blocks of T1_Threads_22 [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_07].

Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)

Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source (Charaka; Sushruta; Zarrilli on Kalaripayattu; the Tirumantiram) [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)

South India is authored as a hub in its web — the Sri Lanka crossing just made, the wootz-steel trade forged west toward Persia and beyond, the monsoon route to the Swahili Coast ahead — never an isolated interior [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].

Key sites and spatial layout

Story-load-bearing sites, each cleared through a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the World Geography Master, never the RCM [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 7] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture.

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)

Sub-bosses across different threads feed one main encounter; every fight is blended, primary-and-secondary-verb, three-axis (never 100-0-0), with phase escalation that evolves the moveset (HL_0078), at least two counters per signature attack, and a reward on win and on death [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078] [SRC: T1_Combat_System_Spec].

Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)

Ch 7 is standard care and community-protected: the §17.1 line is absolute on combat against the Tamil and Malayali communities, the Siddha tradition, and the temple and its practitioners, and the Siddhas, the kalari and temple communities, the smiths and healers, and the honored Raghavendra are allies and protected non-targets [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0123]. The main fight is an honorable integrity-testing duel, never a killing (the killing blow always refusable, possible only at integrity cost, HL_0021). All other combat routes against the corrupted marma-assassin (a healer who turned the art to murder), the restored Surapadman-class asura (the tradition's OWN condemned demon, faced in the Soorasamharam's demon-slaying spirit, never a slaying of anything sacred), and the temple-guardian dvarapala trial. Meenakshi and Murugan are honored and inviolate, their precincts guarded not desecrated, and the goddess and the deity are never targets; the dvarapala is the tradition's own guardian, never trope-horror; the Siddha deathlessness is depicted as its own sources hold it. All perception stays Neophyte — the marma map learned as a craft and integrity read as a skill, never a tier-6 vril-signature read (HL_0028/HL_0017) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005].
