Chapter 6 — Sri Lanka: Seeing True from False — the Genuine Naga, the Counterfeit's Coat, and the Demons the Healers Expel

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (golden re-enrichment of the v2.4 build), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack and the ENRICHMENT_PROPOSAL restoration. Standard-care chapter (CVD §6.2); the §17.1 hard lines bind, and the living Sinhalese, Vedda, Tamil, and Buddhist traditions are represented with weight and as they understand themselves — the malevolent Tovil yakku restored as the tradition's own condemned disease-demons (Mahasona, Riri Yaka, the Daha-ata Sanniya), expelled by the community's own kattadiya/edura exorcist-healer and held strictly distinct from the revered Vedda nae-yaku ancestral spirits (the Ch 4 leyak / Ch 5 begu-ganjang precedent — the exorcised malevolent register is villain material, the venerated ancestral register is not); the genuine Naga a conscious sacred civilization and inviolate, only the counterfeit deceiver-yaka wearing its form the target; the deception carried at L3 as the Mara-vijaya illusion-principle, never declared; the Vedda people honored and never combat targets, the Buddhist sangha and the two unaware monks protected. Reveal-timing note — no House-of-Velheim name/family/pattern (the counterfeit is a self-arising deceiver feeding on a passive rivalry, no summoner, pre-Velheim; the family first appears at Ch 8); the Grand Sage is dark; the substrate-perception onset stays far ahead at the Ch 15 Adeptus-Minor Inscription crossing (HL_0028). Drafted is not canonical.

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 6 start state = Ch 5 end state)

Ch 6 opens from Ch 5's committed end state [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_05]: a young elven child (Childhood; internal age 10); no companions; Shell the Water familiar sustained, Kira the Bali Starling (F1) and Khan the Sumatran Tiger (G1) bonded, the Sanur Octopus (W4) deferred and gated; the Child Familiar still lost and believed dead (Ch 58 reveal); no home; concealment at ACTIVE_CONCEALMENT; the healer's-child mystery active; the paths carrying direction plus magnitude near the L3 Neutral band [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child]. Ch 5 turned the concealment skill into reading others; Ch 6 sharpens it into reading true from false — and pays the emotional cost of that edge, on an island where a child who is a true thing dressed as an ordinary one meets a false thing dressed as a sacred one.

Body prose

The protagonist comes ashore onto an island older than any empire they will meet, and travels first into its sacred plain, to Anuradhapura, where a tree still lives that was planted before their oldest lesson — a fig grown from a cutting carried across the sea, its planting year remembered to the season — and where great domed stupas of fitted brick stand among monasteries that have argued doctrine for centuries. The age of the place makes the protagonist feel young in a steadying way; and reading its Pali inscriptions, they find yet another people who wrote to last.

From the sacred city they walk out into the dry-zone, where the whole land is engineered: thousands of tanks stepped down the gentle slopes, each feeding the next through a stone sluice-tower whose valve lets water out under its own pressure without bursting the bund — a hydraulic civilization that turned a monsoon-and-drought island into a garden. The protagonist reads it as engineering and files the pattern away, not knowing it is the first shape of a thing they will not meet in full for a very long time. And deep in the forest at the dry-zone's edge live a people who never forgot what the rest of the world lost — the Vedda, who still keep the old perception and honor their ancestral dead directly. Meeting them is the first time the protagonist sees, in another face, the thing they have been hiding in their own; the Vedda elder mistakes nothing about them and says nothing, and that unspoken recognition is a gift and a grief at once.

But the same island that teaches seeing-true teaches the cost of seeing wrong. A false thing has taken the shape of a sacred one — a deceiver, a yaka of the kind the island's own traditions name and fear, wearing reverence like a stolen coat, drinking the offerings and dread meant for a genuine and living Naga, and quietly widening an old quarrel between two great monasteries by feeding on their distrust. And the whole danger of it is that to strike the counterfeit without certainty is to wound the real: the true Naga are a conscious sacred people of this island, inviolate, and a careless blade cuts the wrong way. The protagonist learns that perception is not gentle — that it can be a blade, and that the blade must be held until the eye is sure. They read the counterfeit the way one reads a forged manifest, against the marks a true Naga answers to and a coat cannot fake, and they break the coat without touching what it stole; and in the breaking, the quarrel it fed on is laid bare and cooled, and neither monastery nor either unknowing monk is harmed.

Not every false thing wears a revered face. In a village along the way a sickness has a shape — a malevolent yaka of the Tovil demonology, a graveyard-and-crossroads thing that fastens on the ill and the traveler — and here the protagonist does not stand alone: the village's own kattadiya, its exorcist-healer, drums and masks and chants the long night of the healing rite, and the protagonist holds the warded ground beside them until the demon is named, faced, and driven back out into the dark. The Tovil yaku are the island's own condemned evil, the thing the healing exists to expel; they are nothing like the Vedda's honored ancestral spirits, and the protagonist learns to keep the two apart the way they have learned to keep true from false everywhere else.

The road toward the highlands lifts a single sheer rock out of the plain, and the protagonist climbs it because a fortress-city was once cut into its crown. The ascent is two hundred paces of granite hauled up the face, past a gallery of painted women whose colors have held for longer than most of the empires the protagonist has crossed. Below them runs a long plastered wall polished until it gives back a face, and along it are scratched the verses of everyone who ever stood there and looked. The protagonist stops where the wall is brightest and meets their own reflection — and the whole island's lesson turns and points inward. They have spent the whole journey reading true from false in every other thing; here the false and the true are the same face, an ordinary child's shape worn over a hidden one, and the wall asks whether they can hold their own true reflection without flinching from what is under the borrowed coat. They steady, and hold it, and something in the reading eases. Then they come down off the rock and turn for the mountain the pilgrims climb.

There is a mountain here that four faiths climb by four names and each call holy, and the protagonist climbs it the way the pilgrims do, station by station, in respect of every tradition that shares the path. Standing where the four ways converge at the footprint at the summit, they feel something they cannot yet name — that the many names might be reaching for one thing. It is not said; it is only a pressure at the edge of the chest, filed with the others. The paths turn on how the protagonist handles a doubt: on the good path they hold their hand until they are sure and spare what is real; on the corrosive path they strike first and let certainty catch up, and something true pays for it. By the time they come back down toward the sea, they have learned the island's quiet and dangerous gift — that to see clearly is to be responsible for what you see — and a young elephant of the tank-country, met at the healing, walks a little way with them before they take ship.

Threads advancing (T0_Thread_Grid, 15 cells)

Mirrored to the canonical Thread grid (per-thread rows keyed THREAD_NN) and the per-chapter blocks of T1_Threads_22 [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_06].

Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)

Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source (Brohier on the hydraulics; the Mahavamsa; Coningham on Anuradhapura) [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)

Sri Lanka is authored as a hub in its web — the South-Indian crossing to Ch 7, the maritime trade that carries the vital-force and disease-demon parallels onward, the Vedda continuity older than any of it — never an isolated island [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].

Key sites and spatial layout

Story-load-bearing sites, each cleared through a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the World Geography Master, never the RCM [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 6] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture. Combat is walled off the protected living sacred city and the Vedda forest and routed only at the counterfeit's usurped water-shrine and, per HL_0004, the village ward against the tradition's own condemned demon.

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)

Sub-bosses across different threads feed one main encounter; every fight is blended, primary-and-secondary-verb, three-axis (never 100-0-0), with phase escalation that evolves the moveset (HL_0078), at least two counters per signature attack, and a reward on win and on death [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078] [SRC: T1_Combat_System_Spec].

Thread-join note: THREAD_04 (Flood Memory, the minor Tamil-Hindu syncretic anchor) and THREAD_20 (Sacred Objects, the kastane curved-blade substrate) advance at chapter-ambient level in the preserved Threads block, no single carrier beat — deliberate; every other chapter thread is joined to a named beat.

Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)

Ch 6 is standard care and community-protected: the §17.1 line is absolute on combat against the Sinhalese, the Vedda, the Tamil community, and the Buddhist sangha and their sacred practice, and the edura healers, the monks, the physicians, and the villagers are allies and protected non-targets [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0123]. The genuine Naga is a conscious sacred being and inviolate — striking it is a designed failure state, never a victory. All combat routes against the counterfeit deceiver-yaka (the tradition's own illusion-demon wearing a revered form, broken without touching what it stole), the malevolent Tovil disease-demons (Mahasona, Riri Yaka, the Daha-ata Sanniya — the island's own condemned evil, expelled alongside the community's own edura through the healing rite, held strictly distinct from the revered Vedda nae-yaku ancestral spirits and never confused with them), and the ascent-trial guardians. The Vedda, the sangha, and the two unaware monks whose passive rivalry the counterfeit exploits are honored, never targets. All perception stays Neophyte — reverence-response, inscription, and behavioral tells, never a tier-6 vril-signature read (HL_0028/HL_0017) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005].
