Chapter 5 — Sumatra and Java: The Sold Strait, the Bound Serpent, and the Road to the God-King's Mountain

Body prose

The protagonist comes into Java's monument-country by river and road, and the first thing the land does is make them feel small in a way that helps. They climb a great terraced monument level after level toward a silence at the top — and reading its walls, holding a second people's inscription against the one they already carry, they feel the two click together as cousins: writing is one act wearing many hands, and the thing behind their eye is not a Manggarai trick or a Balinese one but something the whole world has been doing all along. None of it is named; it arrives as a quiet click of recognition and is filed with the rest.

From the high stone they come down to the water, to a river-port where the whole coast's traffic gathers, and here the chapter's real trouble surfaces — not a monster to be fought but a betrayal to be read. The strait has been sold. A broker's ledger, chased entry by entry through the wharves, names who was bought, and it points inland and upland, to the man who sold it. So the protagonist leaves the coast and climbs, up out of the ports into the Batak highlands, to a lake that a mountain once became, a caldera so vast the eye cannot hold it. Above that water they learn the larger version of the lesson the monument only hinted: the world has survived catastrophes older and greater than their own, emptiness is only a chapter and not the end, and the depletion they carry is weather rather than doom.

There the seller waits: a datu, a ritual-authority chief respected in daylight, who has read Srivijaya's collapse and decided to sell it a piece at a time — route-knowledge, harbor access, the secrets locked in bark-book manuscripts, traded to whichever power is rising. And a datu is not only a broker of secrets; he is a keeper of forces, and this one keeps a begu ganjang — a tall killing-spirit conjured and fed for the wealth it brings, set on the necks of those who would resist him. The village fears it, and is right to; its fear is not superstition to be dismissed but knowledge of a real evil its own tradition names and condemns. Against it stands a healer of the Samosir highlands, who keeps the ancestral dead rightly and wards the houses the datu's spirit hunts. Walking the warded thresholds at her side, the protagonist learns to tell the kept killing-spirit from the honored dead it counterfeits — and the corrupt datu from the office he disgraces.

This chief is also the first to read back. Every corrupted vessel before him was blind to what the protagonist truly is; this one has been briefed — told, by powers he only half-understands, to watch for exactly the kind of wrongness their vital-force gives off. He never sees through the disguise they wear on their face, but he is the first to feel the deeper thing beneath it, a ritual-specialist's trained unease sharpened by a warning, and that recognition is a new kind of danger the concealment they have practiced cannot answer.

And the sold strait has a trail that runs further than the highlands. The ledger does not stop at the water's edge; it runs north — back down to the coast and up the strait, over the isthmus where porters carry cargo across the neck of the peninsula, along the gulf, and inland up a lake that floods backward once a year — to a stone city where a whole empire is being sold the same way, a little at a time. There the god-king's mountain rises in five towers that are a map of the cosmos, and a great mirror-lake of water holds the harvests of a million people. And there the pattern the protagonist has just learned to read wears a court robe: an official who has decided the empire's decline is his to monetize, diverting the labor and hoarding the water and selling the sanctuaries, betraying a king remembered for saying that his subjects' pain was his own. When the wards are perverted the temple's own stone guardians rouse against the intruder, and out on the great lake two proud peoples are still bleeding from a war of fleets. The protagonist climbs the god-king's mountain the way the pilgrims do, reads the churning of a cosmic ocean carved along a wall, turns the water back to the fields it was stolen from, and then doubles back down the whole long route to the sea — carrying north-country knowledge the way they carry everything, filed and unnamed.

Beneath all of it, older than the datu or his spirit or the empire he is selling, something turns in iron. The Batak say the earth was fashioned on the back of a serpent bound in fetters, and that when he thrashes the ground shakes; in that highland caldera the child had felt the deep-time weight of it — not a beast to be killed, for he cannot be killed, only endured and steadied and let settle back into his binding — and filed away, without knowing why, that the world holds its worst catastrophes down by holding, not by winning. Everything now turns on what the protagonist does with a purchased man's fear and a stolen city's water: on the good path the strait is opened and the bought are given a way back and the killing-spirit's hold is broken and the mountain's water returns to its fields, and the corrupt datu and the god-king's official are taken alive to answer for what they sold. The compound duel and the god-king's court each leave a killing-blow within reach on the corrupt man himself — offered to a harder road, but never demanded of it and never the only way through, and a blade taken there falls on the seller alone, never on the village he preyed on or the peoples whose collapse he traded. On the corrosive path the ledgers are kept, their leverage now their own. Somewhere beneath the great monument, water falls the way it fell at the first cave, and the child always stops to listen.
