Chapter 4 — Bali: The Island of Two Faces, the Night-Witch, and the Editing Hand

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (golden re-enrichment of the v2.4 build), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack and the ENRICHMENT_PROPOSAL restoration. Standard-care chapter (CVD §6.2); the §17.1 hard lines bind, and the living Balinese tradition (Tri Hita Karana, the Barong-Rangda balance, the balian and pedanda, the leyak/pengiwa and bhuta-kala demonology, gamelan, lontar) is represented with weight and as it understands itself — the leyak restored as the tradition's own condemned black-magic evil (not a manufactured hoax), Rangda deliberately LEFT ambivalent-and-revered (never villainized), the balians and priests and villagers allies and protected. Reveal-timing note — no House-of-Velheim name/family/pattern (the certification vessel is UNAWARE; the family first appears at Ch 8); the Grand Sage is dark. Drafted is not canonical.

Entry header (schema per §9.5)

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 4 start state = Ch 3 end state)

Ch 4 opens from Ch 3's committed end state [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_03]: a young elven child (Childhood; internal age 9); no companions; Shell the Water familiar now bonded (the first chosen bond); the Child Familiar still lost and believed dead (Ch 58 reveal); no home established; concealment at ACTIVE_CONCEALMENT as strategic discipline; the healer's-child mystery active and unresolved; the paths carrying direction plus emerging magnitude near the L3 Drifting band (the WS3 Neutral world-state) [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child]. Ch 4 deepens rather than resets: the inscription-sense becomes reading, a second bond becomes possible, and the protagonist meets a whole society organized around the duality they are quietly becoming.

Body prose

Bali is the first place that does openly what the protagonist does in secret. Coming down from Besakih, the mother-temple high on Gunung Agung's flank, into the villages below, the child finds two faces — the lion and the witch, the ordered and the wild — carried through the streets together, not as enemies to be resolved but as a balance the whole island is built to hold. For a child who has learned to keep one face turned from the firelight, a society that wears both faces at once is unsettling and, quietly, a relief.

But the island's duality is not only ceremonial, and the child learns that the hard way. In the village there is a pillar of the community, respected in daylight, who is something else after dark — a pengiwa adept, a practitioner of the left-hand craft, who unbinds at night into a leyak, a flying head with trailing entrails that hunts the sick and the newborn. This is not a fear someone manufactured; it is the tradition's own named evil, and the village's own balian stands against it with the right-hand craft, warding the houses where the vulnerable sleep. Siding with the balian and defending the villagers, and washing clean afterward in the purification springs at Tirta Empul, the protagonist meets the thing the island's masks are a discipline against — a real monster wearing a respectable second face, which is the exact shape of the larger corruption the chapter is really about.

Because behind all of it, at the temple-performance ground where the shadow-play is staged, another face hides behind a screen. A master of shadow-plays stages stories he believes are wholly his own, never knowing that the performance sanction he has always simply obeyed has quietly been editing what he is allowed to perform, threading another purpose through his art. Freeing him means learning to look past the shadow to the shape of the thing that moves it — and then, harder than any fight, showing the master himself what he has never been able to see. It is the first time the protagonist is asked not to win a fight but to reveal a truth to the one person it will wound. A first, hard lesson in learning to see what steers an art from behind its own screen.

Two kinds of depth open through it all. Among the palm-leaf lontar of the temple the protagonist meets the first true writing they have seen, marks that hold meaning across generations, and the inscription-sense that woke in a cave becomes, for the first time, reading; and passing the Jatiluwih terraces on the way down, the subak water-temple system laid across the hills, they see an island order itself without a single hand forcing it. At the Sanur reef the water answers back again, as it did at the Flores falls. The paths turn on how the protagonist treats a coerced man and a monstrous one: on the good path the artist is freed and his name kept clean and the leyak driven off without harm to the community; on the corrosive path the leverage that squeezed the artist is noticed, understood, and filed away as a tool. Bali teaches that balance is a discipline and not a truce — and the protagonist, becoming a balance of two directions themselves, carries that out past the Uluwatu sea-cliff temple and on across the water without yet knowing why it fits.

Threads advancing (17 cells)

Mirrored to the canonical Thread grid (per-thread rows keyed THREAD_NN) and the per-chapter blocks of T1_Threads_22 (canonical-22 names, verified against the grid) — Bali is the arc's densest convergence node [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_04].

Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)

Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source (Eiseman, Bali Sekala and Niskala) [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)

Bali is authored as a hub in its web — the Java kingdoms to the west (with the later Majapahit-Java absorption reached only as a forward time-fluctuation stratum), the maritime trade routes, the coming Borobudur crossing — never an isolated island [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].

Key sites and spatial layout

Story-load-bearing sites, each cleared through a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the World Geography Master, never the RCM [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 4] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture.

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)

Sub-bosses across different threads feed one main encounter; every fight is blended, primary-and-secondary-verb, three-axis, with phase escalation that evolves the moveset (HL_0078), and a reward on win and on death per the T1_Combat failure-states rule [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078] [SRC: T1_Combat_System_Spec].

Thread-join note: THREAD_04 (Flood Memory), THREAD_05 (Tree of Life / World Axis — the meru axis-mundi and kalpavrksha at Besakih), THREAD_16 (Dream Traditions / Astral — the Surya Sewana Solar-Hero seed, LINK_0082), THREAD_20 (Sacred Objects — the keris pusaka), and THREAD_22 (Sacred Stones — the linggih platforms) advance at chapter-ambient level (the preserved Threads block and the typed site/asset rows), no single carrier beat — deliberate; every other chapter thread is joined to a named beat.

Side-questlines (§11 — machine gate + beat interleave)

Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)

Ch 4 is standard care and community-protected: the §17.1 line is absolute on combat against the Balinese and their sacred practice, and the balians and pedanda and villagers are allies and protected non-targets [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0123]. All combat routes against the real leyak in its condemned night-form (the tradition's own adharma evil, driven off with the balian's warding, never a community killing and never a revered figure), the bhuta-kala (the island's out-of-balance chthonic demons, appeased/banished as the caru tradition holds), the materialized certification apparatus, and temple-guardian fauna; the unaware Dalang is a protected victim-vessel freed by revelation, never a target. The Barong-Rangda tradition is a balance held, never a monster slain; Rangda is the ambivalent-maternal, revered-and-feared archetype (her consecrated mask sacred), deliberately NEVER villainized — the guardrail held, the enrichment fed instead by the un-revered leyak. The leyak, Rangda, and bhuta-kala are depicted as the tradition holds them, never as horror trope [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005].
