Chapter 3 — Flores Island: Manggarai Village, the Potent Land, and the First Belonging
Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (golden re-enrichment of the v2.4 build), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack, the graded Ch 3 reference build, and the ENRICHMENT_PROPOSAL restoration. Standard-care chapter (CVD §6.2); the §17.1 hard lines bind, and the living Manggarai tradition (Wae Rebo, caci, lingko, the compang, the healer-elder and proverb traditions, the potent-landscape belief) is represented with weight and as it understands itself — the benevolent dukun/healer never the villain, the malevolence grounded in the land's own amoral agents (the darat) and a twisted-word sorcerer. Reveal-timing note — no House-of-Velheim name, family, or pattern is surfaced (the Ch-3 land-pressure predates the family; it first appears at Ch 8); the Grand Sage is dark. Drafted is not canonical.

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 3 start state = Ch 2 end state)
Ch 3 opens from Ch 2's committed end state [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_02]: a young elven child (Childhood; internal age 9); no companions (the fairy-realm companions lost at the rift-fall); the Child Familiar believed dead by the player yet canonically escaped (Ch 58 reveal, Truly Good path only); Shell the Water familiar encountered at the recharge waterfall as vril-trace registration only, no bond yet; no home established; identity concealment a survival reflex at FIRST_CONCEALMENT; the three paths set in direction only, all within the L3 Drifting band (the WS3 Neutral world-state); and the Ch-2 village-edge glimpse of Child Teresa (CHAR_0012) carried as a first-peer trust into the Manggarai community's reception, though she does not travel on [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child] [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0012]. Ch 3 is where three of those carry-forwards change: Shell bonds, concealment turns strategic, and path magnitude begins to draw visible response from named people.
Body prose
As a child the protagonist walks out of the jungle and up into the cone-roofed houses of the Wae Rebo village, and learns at once that a village is harder to survive than a forest. Concealment stops being a reflex and becomes a craft here — a cloth kept over the ears, a habit of standing where the firelight does not reach — because for the first time there are eyes that stay.
One pair stays longer than the rest. The village healer, Mama Klara, never looks at the protagonist directly; she watches the stillness around them, and after a full day she says a thing she will not explain and never explains again. She names what the rift emptied, not a wound but a depletion, and she leads the child down to her waterfall and does there what the child could not do alone: she fills the emptied vessel and raises its floor for good. It is the first time since the fall that someone has made the protagonist more whole rather than less — and she is a healer, a keeper of the good knowledge, not a thing to fear.
But the land itself is not so gentle, and the village knows it. The Manggarai hold that the ground is a potent agent — that the darat, the beautiful amoral spirits of forest and spring, and the naga tana, the serpent that guards the soil, must be asked before they are used. Out at the lingko fields, whose spider-web lines the elders lay from the Compang Ruteng center-stone, an outside broker's crew begins clearing lingko-adjacent forest to force the village off its fields, and they cut without the ritual contract the land requires. The transgression is not only political. It rouses the guardian: at the Wae water-source spring the serpent the village had lived beside for generations turns dangerous — not from malice but from violation — and the child learns that righting the land-grab and calming the roused land are the same act, finished only when the sacrificial contract is restored and the whip-blood of the caci, danced out at the Todo royal ground, is given back to the earth it belongs to. But the caci is not only the land's rite; it is the village's contest, and the child earns a place in it. A caci age-peer named Ana, quick and unafraid, vouches for the outsider on that same royal ground, and the elders grant entry the way a guest is granted it — asked for, given with respect, never assumed. The round is scored and timed: one dancer holds the whip and one the rattan shield, and the protagonist takes the shield first, reading Ana's step and turning each cracking arc on the shield until the count is kept, then trading to the whip for the answering pass. It is a courtesy with teeth and not a brawl — the danced advance, the shielded parry, a child's round won on the clean turn and the kept count, not on anyone's skin, with first blood kept for the elders' ceremony and given back to the earth it fertilises — and it is the first contest the protagonist has ever fought for a place instead of a life, a ring and a crowd and a kept count the body will remember long after this island is behind them.
Belonging returns twice and unevenly through all of this. On a short backtrack down to the Ch-2 cave at Liang Bua the protagonist reads an inscription on purpose for the first time — the deep-time vril trace of the small people who once lived there — and the water-familiar that shadowed the protagonist out of that same cave finally lets itself be known at the spring, and a bond forms — the first the protagonist has chosen in this world, and the first proof that the loss in the cave did not end the possibility of attachment. And the healer's child begins leaving unsigned marks where the protagonist sleeps, a watching the protagonist feels and does not yet understand. By the time the pressure is lifted, the whip-duel won without a killing, and the land quieted, the protagonist has learned the shape of what is coming — that hiding and being seen are one problem, that a place can be defended without being kept, and that some of the oldest powers in the world are neither good nor evil but simply owed what they are owed — and they carry that down out of the highlands toward the sea and the next island.
Threads advancing
Mirrored to the canonical Thread grid (per-thread rows keyed THREAD_NN) and the per-chapter blocks of T1_Threads_22 (canonical-22 names, verified against the grid, never inferred) [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_03].
Thread 1 Vril Parallels — ESCALATION: semangat continues as the culturally named vril-parallel; Mama Klara diagnoses it and the waterfall ritual raises the capacity floor [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 1] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_01].
Thread 2 Serpent — ANCHOR: the naga tana, the land-serpent guardian of the soil at the Wae water-source, roused by the ritual-less clearing — the potent-land agent restored, not a de-fanged python [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 2] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_02].
Thread 3 Antagonist Family — ANCHOR (player-facing as institutional land-pressure; the family does not yet exist here): a pre-colonial deforestation-and-extraction crew, the pattern escalating from the Ch 2 individual scale to the community-institutional scale [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 3] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_03].
Thread 5 Tree of Life / World Axis — ANCHOR: the Compang Ruteng communal center as the arc's first human-built axis mundi, the lingko cooperative fields radiating from it [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 5] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_05].
Thread 13 Sacred Geometry — CONFRONTATION: the mbaru-niang five-story circular proportions and the lingko spider-web (lodok) field geometry, the arc's first human-built sacred geometry [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 13] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_13].
Thread 14 Blood Sacrifice — CONFRONTATION: the caci ceremonial whip-combat as an agricultural blood-fertilizes-earth tradition, the recurring bull-sacrifice thread's first explicit anchor — the Bull-Sacrifice weaving (Weaving 11) originating here on the water buffalo and the caci — and, restored here, literal appeasement of the potent land (LINK_0106-0110 set the thread forward) [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 14] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_14].
Thread 17 Sacred Scripts — ESCALATION: the first deliberate use of the inscription ability, reading the deep-time vril trace of Homo floresiensis at Liang Bua on a backtrack from Ch 2 [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 17] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_17].
Thread 21 Music — ANCHOR: the Manggarai gong-waning and ceremonial drumming context (Pak Kornelius's caci ensemble) [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 21] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_21].
Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)
Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source (Erb's Manggarai ethnography, Allerton's potent-landscape study) [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The lingko field system — the spider-web (lodok) communal land-division radiating from a central point, a documented and distinctive customary land-tenure and cooperative-irrigation achievement still worked today (Thread 5 + the arc's first explicit sacred geometry, Thread 13), credited to Manggarai adat per Erb [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 3] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The mbaru niang of Wae Rebo — the five-story conical timber houses of the village recognized with the 2012 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Excellence for Cultural Heritage Conservation, a documented vernacular-architecture and social-organization achievement [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 3] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The compang — the communal stone platform-center, the arc's first human-built axis mundi and a documented social-ritual organizing structure [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 3] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The songket and ikat textile tradition — the Manggarai backstrap pattern-weaving carried by Weaver-Elder Ibu Martina, the Trade 6 Tailoring substrate seed (the home itself roots later, at Ch 21); Martina holds the Trade-6 seat and the pattern authority (what a pattern is allowed to say about whose you are and where you stand), and Weaver Woman Emma (CHAR_0010) carries it hands-on at the village loom under that authority, which is where the player's own first bad piece is made [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 3] [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0018] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The Wae Rebo unity-weaving mark (cross-cultural) — the Weaving-20 first faint instance, the Manggarai fairy-realm parallel that opens the architecture-and-unity progression to Bali (LINK_0119, LINK_0137), framed as motif-convergence, never diffusion [SRC: T0_Cross_Cultural_Link_Graph @ LINK_0137] [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].
Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)
Manggarai Flores is authored as a hub in its web — the rival-village lingko negotiations, the Portuguese and Dutch colonial strata reached by time-fluctuation, the trade-envoy routes, and the Bali crossing ahead — never an isolated village; the relational edges are woven through the facets, controlled for relevance at the significance-lens pass [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].
Combat routes through the bought outside Caci Champion, the deforestation extraction crew, the roused naga tana / darat (the violated land, appeased not slain), and the twisted-word sorcerer — never the Manggarai community.
Exploration is the lingko fields, the Wae Rebo mbaru-niang, the Compang Ruteng plaza, the Todo royal village, and Mama Klara's waterfall caverns.
Discovery is the first deliberate inscription read — the deep-time Homo floresiensis vril trace at Liang Bua (Thread 17's originating anchor).
Puzzles are the waterfall restoration ritual, the lingko and mbaru-niang sacred-geometry surfaces, and the twisted-proverb un-inversion.
Mystery is the healer's-child unsigned notes and Mama Klara's unexplained recognition.
Lore is the darat and naga-tana potent-landscape belief, the Manggarai proverb tradition, and the caci meaning.
Trades seed the Trade 6 Tailoring substrate — Ibu Martina's songket/ikat holds the Trade-6 seat and the pattern authority, taught hands-on at the loom by Weaver Woman Emma under that authority — and the cooperative lingko farming; no home base here.
Gathering is lingko field labor, waterfall ritual botanicals, and highland foraging.
Side quests are the rival-village lingko negotiation and Merchant Siti's carried rumor chain (block 11).
Engineering is the mbaru-niang cone-roof construction and the compang stone center (Thread 13 proportions).
Folklore is the naga tana, the darat, and the water-spirit tradition of the spring.
Superstition is the twisted-word register and the land-contract cosmology by which the community reads the roused land.
Key sites and spatial layout
Story-load-bearing sites, each cleared through a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the World Geography Master, never the RCM [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 3] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture.
env: the five-story conical mbaru-niang timber houses in cloud-forest highland (the 2012 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Excellence for Cultural Heritage Conservation; protected living heritage referenced not reproduced); the agility course hosts here — the mbaru-niang five-story ascent, architecture-vertical, with a cone-roof-proportion Puzzle variant; hosts CH03_B01/CH03_B12; L1/L2.
env: the lingko spider-web (lodok) fields radiating from the Compang Ruteng center-stone, the axis-mundi plaza (Thread 5/13) and the land-grab's object; vril low and rising as the roused land presses (the v2.5 low-rising kept as env texture); the ambient threat is the roused land, never the community; hosts CH03_B07/CH03_B11; L1/L2.
env: the village water-source spring, the naga-tana site — the potent-land guardian roused by violation, appeased not slain; the Shell bond forms at the calmed water; hosts CH03_B05/CH03_B06; L1/L3.
env: the Todo royal village and its caci ground (protected living heritage referenced not reproduced) — the ritual whip-and-shield contest ground where the community assembles; split from the v2.5 joint Todo-and-forest-edge row, the joint texture kept here; hosts CH03_B08/CH03_B09/CH03_B10; L1.
env: the lingko-adjacent montane forest under the broker's ritual-less clearing — the marking-and-felling line and the skirmish ground; split from the v2.5 joint Todo-and-forest-edge row; hosts CH03_B04; L1.
env: the Ch-2 arrival cave on a deliberate backtrack — the deep-time Homo floresiensis vril trace read on purpose for the first time (type-site referenced not reproduced); hosts CH03_B03; L2/L3.
Inter-chapter travel — arrival on foot from the Ch 2 jungle; departure by sea toward Bali (Ch 4), the architecture-and-unity weaving crossing [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 3].
Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)
Sub-bosses across different threads feed one main boss; every fight is blended, primary-and-secondary-verb, three-axis, with phase escalation that evolves the moveset (HL_0078), and a reward on win and on death per the T1_Combat failure-states rule [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078] [SRC: T1_Combat_System_Spec].
BE_0003 "Kaba Lomes, the bought Caci Champion" (for the land-pressure broker Ngoéng Tana; Thread 14, blood sacrifice) · primary PARRY · secondary EXPOSE · axis 45/30/25 · phases [P1→CH03_B09, P2→CH03_B10] · win {ws.community_state_per_region: +manggarai_land_pressure_lifted_broker_exposed} · death {the village negotiates on worse terms + the whip cadence logged — and Kaba Lomes gifts a caci technique on win and death alike, no fail-wall} [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # boss_03_main]
sub-bosses (each a beat): BE_0003_S1 the Naga Tana of the Wae (ATTUNE/PERCEIVE, 30/45/25 puzzle-forward, the roused potent-land soil-guardian appeased not slain — the win restores the ngoéng-de-tana sacrificial contract and grants the ritual-botanical gather node; the loss runs the waterfall ritual at a partial ceiling) → CH03_B05 · BE_0003_S2 the Deforestation Scout-Captain Poka Puar (DISARM/RESCUE, 40/25/35 patterns-and-preparation, oppressor combat per ruling 5 — the win frees conscripts as valley allies; the loss maps the whistle grammar that deliberately recurs as the Ch-39 modern patrol grammar) → CH03_B04 · BE_0003_S3 the Twisted-Word Sorcerer's proverb-constructs, Tombo Holes (DECODE/EXPOSE, 20/50/30 puzzle-dominant, a materialized-argument encounter in the Ch 69 lineage — the win restores the proverb tradition true; the loss reveals the inversion pattern; Thread 11 lineage continued from the Ch 2 anchor, scored on the grid at Ch 2 with no separate Ch-3 cell per RR-12) → CH03_B07; the registry rows were re-grounded to the roused naga-tana framing and the stale dukun reference retired at the v3 conversion (six drifted cells corrected, baseline-declared) [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # boss_03_main] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005]
reveal binding: the land-pressure broker, his crew, and his bought champion predate the House of Velheim entirely — a purely local pre-colonial structure, the community-institutional escalation of the corruption pattern the arc is secretly about (the family first appears at Ch 8); no family name, pattern, or operative chain exists to surface [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 3].

The v2.5 resolution bullet named truly_good / good_enough / neutral / evil as path labels — the retired vocabulary. v3.1 keys the options by ACTION with a direction; the five texture bands are the DERIVED axis (§18); the naga-tana appeasement and the caci rounds are reward-both-ways boss outcomes (CH03_B05, CH03_B09), not player forks — the durable direction-set is this resolution tetrad, Substantial class per §5.1 [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1].
Assigned from CVD §17.6 where the Questline registry is a stub; per-chapter stage/gate/hook/reward typed to the v3.1 row grammar [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0032] [POPULATE→T0_Questline_Index].
SQ1 · questline fairy_tale_folklore · stage ADVANCE · gate has(local.naga_contract_offered) · beats [CH03_B05, CH03_B11] · reward the Manggarai folklore substrate (the darat, the naga tana, the potent-landscape belief) and the appeasement-not-slaying lesson — advanced from the Ch-2 seed
SQ4 · questline mystery_detective · stage SEED · gate none · beats [CH03_B07, CH03_B12] · reward the healer's-child mystery thread (the unsigned marks, opening toward the Ch-13 join) and the detective's-eye method from the untwisting — the v2.5 SEED-to-ADVANCE texture kept: seeded here, its first advance rides the in-chapter exposure
SQ2 · questline military_history · stage SEED · gate at(todo_royal_village) · beats [CH03_B08, CH03_B09] · reward the caci technique (gifted by Kaba Lomes on win and loss alike) and the living martial-history substrate
SQ9 · questline cryptids · stage ADVANCE · gate none · beats [CH03_B03] · reward the Ebu Gogo three-tellings substrate and the who-says-which method — Hunter Anselmus at the village hub gives the little-ones account as his grandfather's telling and names its rivals (the Nage account of the ending at the cave mouth, held as the Nage's own to tell; the highland fireside talk that the deep forest still keeps a few), and the deliberate Liang Bua read at CH03_B03 adds the deep-time trace as a third telling, the three held side by side and never collapsed into one; advanced from the Ch-2 seed. The anti-fringe posture stays authorial: the player collects who says which, never a debunk, and the folklore is never asserted to BE the hominins. The beat list is the dialogue census rather than an intention: both SQ9-hooked player options in the Ch-2/Ch-3 set sit on the one row DL_CH03_HUB_ANSELMUS_D16, whose trigger_beat is CH03_B03, and the whole ebu-gogo telling around it (DL_CH03_HUB_ANSELMUS_D15 to D17, which also carry the two Liang Bua extraction refs) points at that same beat, so CH03_B03 is the only beat the set backs and the CH03_B01 an earlier version of this row carried is retired as unbacked [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 2] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0002]
(twelve_level_gate: none binds at Ch 3; SQ gates are state-conditions, non-gating on the main spine.)
Key ally NPCs
Mama Klara (CHAR_0006), the Manggarai healer-elder (canonical) — diagnoses the semangat depletion and runs the waterfall restoration ritual that permanently raises the vril floor; she watches the space between speakers for a full day before pronouncing, is never a companion, and never reappears after Ch 3 (a hard lock); a benevolent knowledge-holder, never a target [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0006].
The healer's child (CHAR_0002) — begins the silent-observation arc here with unsigned notes, the arc's first human-character mystery and the primary human companion who active-joins at Ch 13 [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002].
Elder Tuan Bernardus (CHAR_0016) — keeper of the untwisted proverb register, the true-voice foil to the twisted-word sorcerer; a council elder and ally [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0016].
Ana (CHAR_0017) — a Manggarai caci age-peer, the first recurring peer-companion (recurs Ch 27/28/41), a thread of the found-family [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017].
The village roster — Elder Rato (CHAR_0009), Weaver-Elder Ibu Martina (CHAR_0018), Trade-Envoy Tuan Yosef (CHAR_0019), Hunter-Father Pak Petrus (CHAR_0020), Peer Agnesius (CHAR_0021), and Musician Pak Kornelius (CHAR_0022) — the protected community, teachers and neighbours, never targets [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0018].
Weaver Woman Emma (CHAR_0010) — met at Ch 2 and present through the Ch-3 village hub as the hands-on Trade-6 teacher at the loom, working under Ibu Martina's pattern authority (Martina keeps the Trade-6 seat); she is the one who reads the concealment cloth as tied wrong and re-ties it, so the chapter's concealment-as-craft turn passes through her hands. A teacher and neighbour, never a target [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0010].
Hunter Anselmus (CHAR_0011) — the uncorrupted Manggarai hunter and the audible counter to the Ch-2 corrupted hunter, present through the Ch-3 hub as the tracking teacher, the caci-entry explainer who points the protagonist at Ana, and the keeper of the ebu-gogo three-tellings; a teacher and neighbour, never a target [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0011].
Child Teresa (CHAR_0012) — the Ch-2 first peer, present through the Ch-3 hub as the village guide who teaches the everyday grammar of a living landscape (walk at the side, not the middle) and who finds the first unsigned mark by where the protagonist sleeps; she is rooted here and does not travel on [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0012].
Roster note (declared, not inherited): CHAR_0010, CHAR_0011 and CHAR_0012 were stamped Ch_02-only in T0_Character_Index while CH_02 itself states the Manggarai village-society opens fully at Ch 3, and the Ch-3 hub dialogue set gives all three substantial Ch-3 presence. The stamp was the stale artifact; chapters_present is re-seated to Ch_02;Ch_03 in the same commit as the dialogue, so the re-seat is declared canon rather than an undeclared drift a later agent would hallucinate around [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0010].

The Wae Rebo conversation hub, declared (added at the Ch-2/Ch-3 dialogue authoring pass). The village-hub conversations with Elder Rato, Weaver Woman Emma, Hunter Anselmus and Child Teresa are NOT the CH03_B01 hook beat and must not be scened onto it. They sit on a hub node, CH03_HUB_WAE_REBO, and each row carries a trigger_beat naming the beat the exchange actually points at: the treeline count and the paint line at CH03_B04, the turned spring and what the water is owed at CH03_B05, Elder Bernardus talking backwards at CH03_B07, the Todo and caci entry protocol at CH03_B08, the unpaid buffalo and the land contract at CH03_B11, the unsigned marks where the protagonist sleeps at CH03_B12, and the little-ones cave at CH03_B03. Only Rato's opening exchange at the center-stone keeps scene CH03_B01, because that exchange genuinely is the hook beat. Two consequences bind any later author: a state gate must never reference the out-state its own scene emits, which is why local.village_reached no longer gates rows sitting inside CH03_B01, and a line whose only home is a beat the chapter does not have is a line the chapter has not earned [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_03].
HUB_AMBIENT, the declared non-beat trigger_beat marker (repair round 2026-08-04, correcting this block's own earlier rule). The first version of the rule above sent hub-ambient talk to trigger_beat CH03_B01, which put 46 rows — including Weaver Woman Emma's whole loom sequence — back on the hook beat and wrote a beat join that is false; the block's own next sentence read against it. The honest form: a hub row whose exchange has no downstream beat in this chapter carries the literal HUB_AMBIENT, which is deliberately not CH_NN-shaped so it can never be read as a beat id. The re-derivation was computed row by row against the §10 beat graph, not assigned: 5 rows keep CH03_B01 (RATO_B01 to RATO_B05, the center-stone opening, which is the hook beat), 1 row moves to CH03_B02 (TERESA_E08, which sends the player to the healer who takes a sumang off them, and CH03_B02 is this chapter's healer beat), and 40 rows take HUB_AMBIENT. Emma's loom sequence is the load-bearing case and it takes HUB_AMBIENT on purpose: the chapter's twelve beats are hook, waterfall-learning, cave-discovery, forest-edge combat, spring combat, spring character, proverb puzzle, Todo character, two caci combats, contract transformation and the exit — checked one by one, there is no craft or trade beat for the loom to point at. Its real downstream is a seed, not a beat, and the row already carries it as a quest_hook (TRADE_06_TAILORING_SEED, joining T0_Quest_Seed_Registry SEED_0003 and SEED_0008), so the marker records the absence instead of inventing a beat to fill it. A later pass that gives Ch 3 a craft beat should move these rows onto it.
The once-only line semantics, DECLARED DEFERRED (not implemented, not silently dropped). Six rows — RATO_B08 the turned spring, RATO_B11 the count-the-crew tasking, RATO_B13 Elder Bernardus talking backwards, RATO_F01 the unpaid buffalo and the low-row house, ANSELMUS_D07 the caci invitation, TERESA_E13 the unsigned marks — were authored to stop firing once the thing they set up is resolved. That was carried as a not has(local.X) condition, which docs/CONDITION_EXPRESSION_GRAMMAR.md has no negation for; rewriting it to a positive gate made it legal but self-gating, and the re-scene above removed the self-gate without restoring the once-only meaning. It cannot be expressed as a condition at all. It awaits ONE of two mechanisms, and the choice is a schema decision rather than an authoring one: line_variant ordering (a resolved variant that supersedes the unresolved one on the same node), or a produced-flag column the condition grammar can test positively. Until one lands, these six lines re-offer their setup after the beat resolves, which is a staleness defect and is recorded here as such rather than left for a later reader to rediscover.
Mama Klara (CHAR_0006) has ZERO dialogue rows in this set, DECLARED DEFERRED SCOPE. Her scene is CH03_B02, the waterfall ritual and the recognition, and this set covers the CH02_B10 village edge and the Wae Rebo hub only; she is the chapter's most load-bearing NPC and her absence is a scope boundary, not a completion. Nothing in this chapter's blocks claims otherwise, and a later pass should not read the hub set as covering her.
The Ch-3 hub hook census, computed (repair round 2026-08-04). Every quest_hook in the set now resolves to something that exists, checked case-sensitively and whole-token against registry ID CELLS by harness/emit_dialogue_rows.py, which refuses to emit otherwise: SQ1 20, SQ4 18, SQ2 11, SQ9 2, TRADE_06_TAILORING_SEED 22 (3 in Ch 2, 19 in Ch 3), SEED_0008 5 (the penti options), SEED_0005 1 (RATO_B02, who decides where the lingko lines go — the ngoéng-de-tana land-contract half of SEED_0005), and five book-extraction segment refs giving orphaned seeds their first consumer: EXR_SRC_00203/S03 the spider at the center-stone (RATO_B02), EXR_SRC_00203/S05 the eel you must not injure (TERESA_E08), EXR_SRC_00193/S02 Lia Ula the wildman cave (ANSELMUS_D15), EXR_SRC_00193/S03 the last band (ANSELMUS_D17), EXR_SRC_00193/S04 the extermination memory at 'Ua (ANSELMUS_D17). The three tokens a prior round minted for this file — SEED_TRADE6_TAILORING, SEED_PENTI_FESTIVAL, SEED_LINGKO_LAND_TENURE — resolve to nothing and are retired. They are named here so the retirement is on the record, and naming them here can no longer make them resolvable, which was not true when this bullet first landed: the first cut of the checker resolved a hook against the raw text of every doc under registries and docs, each of those three tokens occurs in exactly one file in the whole repo — this one — and so this sentence armed all three and left the checker blind to precisely the tokens it was built to catch. Resolution now reads registry id cells only: a registry CSV's key column, the primary-key, id-format and foreign-key columns docs/fk_spec.json declares, and the declared id lists (the SQ and trade anchors, the seed prerequisites, the Chapter_Index questline and trade columns). Prose is not a resolution source in any file, and inside a declared id column a segment carrying whitespace is discarded as prose too, so a sentence can arm a token from nowhere.
The hook-existence tooth, ARMED and proved at HEAD by running it (repair round 2026-08-04, finding F-J). The proof is recorded because the previous round's commit message asserted the same thing and was FALSE as landed — true when it was run, never re-run after the census bullet's prose went in, which is the assert-don't-compute defect this round existed to retire. Computed at HEAD, four runs: running harness/emit_dialogue_rows.py against the previous round's copy of this dialogue set exits 1 with EMIT REFUSED, names 27 dead hooks (SEED_TRADE6_TAILORING 21, SEED_PENTI_FESTIVAL 5, SEED_LINGKO_LAND_TENURE 1) and writes no CSV; running it against the current set exits 0 and re-emits 427 rows byte-identical to the committed docs/proposals/dialogue/dialogue_registry_rows.csv, 282,749 bytes; re-minting the three retired tokens onto live options exits 1 and names each one by row, while this chapter file goes on naming all three in prose; and a token nobody minted, SEED_TOTALLY_NEW_MINTED_TOKEN, exits 1. The checker carries that last case as a standing control rather than a one-time probe: the three retired tokens must never resolve, and at least one of them must still be NAMED in docs/spine prose or the checker declares its own control vacuous and refuses — a control that cannot fail is not a control. Its self-test is 34 fixtures, seven of them on the resolution surface itself (prose in an undeclared column, a prose sentence inside a declared id column, and a token that exists only in a .md file all fail to resolve), because F-J was never a matching defect — the matcher was right and the surface was wrong [SRC: T0_Quest_Seed_Registry @ SEED_0008].
The Keo attribution line, held (flores_island.md Section 4). Elder Rato's account of a disputed field boundary being measured by an impartial elder from an uninvolved third village is KEO customary law, and the region page forbids transferring a neighbour's institution into a Manggarai gap. It is spoken as the neighbours' practice — over the ridge they do it this way — with Rato arguing that his own village should adopt it and holding meanwhile to the plain principle that a man does not measure his own quarrel. The governance stays credited to the Keo and to its own source record (SRC_00230, We Are Children of the Land: A Keo Perspective), the passage keeps its strength, and no Manggarai office is asserted from it [SRC: T0_Region_Index @ flores_island].
Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)
Ch 3 is standard care and community-protected: the §17.1 line is absolute on combat against the Manggarai and their sacred practice, and the benevolent dukun/healer role (Mama Klara) is honored, never the villain [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0123]. All combat routes through oppressors, corrupted agents, and the roused land — the deforestation extraction crew (venture-out-and-protect, rescue conscripts), the bought outside Caci Champion serving the broker (ritual defeat, no kill), the twisted-word sorcerer (a materialized-argument fight, a distinct malevolent practitioner and not the healer role), and the naga tana / darat (the potent land, dangerous because violated, appeased and calmed rather than slain — the resolution RESTORES the community's rite). The caci duel is depicted as the tradition holds it, an agricultural blood-fertilizes-earth ritual, never a cinema trope [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005].
Anti-fringe / Frame-A flags
The potent landscape (darat / naga tana) — at-risk claim: reducing the Manggarai land-spirits to horror-monsters or, conversely, dismissing them as mere superstition. Canonical framing: the darat are the tradition's own amoral spirits of place and the naga tana its soil-guardian, grounded in Allerton's Potent Landscapes and depicted with the weight the Manggarai give them — dangerous when violated, owed ritual, never Hollywood-monstered [SRC: ESOTERIC_GROUNDING] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 3].
The caci whip-combat — at-risk claim: exoticizing the caci as savage spectacle. Canonical framing: a documented ceremonial martial tradition with an agricultural blood-fertilizes-earth meaning, represented as the Manggarai practice it (Erb), never cinema shorthand [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 3].
The lingko and mbaru-niang geometry — at-risk claim: a lost-science sacred-geometry mysticism. Canonical framing: the spider-web field system and the conical-house proportions are documented customary land-tenure and vernacular architecture (Erb; the 2012 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Excellence for Cultural Heritage Conservation), held as achievement and Thread-5/13 lore, never fringe super-science [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 3].
Three-layer surfacing
L1 self-contained: a depleted traveler arrives, is healed at the waterfall, wins a whip-duel, drives off a logging crew, calms a dangerous spring, and lifts a land grab — fully playable with zero metaphysics [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0047].
L2 investigatable: the healer's-child journal begins; the proverb cycle, the caci ritual meaning, the lingko land-tenure logic, the mbaru-niang proportions, and the potent-landscape belief are readable documented lore, and the Liang Bua vril-trace read is recorded [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 3].
L3 metaphysical-as-real, never declared: semangat is the same vril substrate under a Manggarai name and the ritual permanently raises capacity; the roused naga tana is the potent land operating as real (violate the contract, rouse the guardian) surfaced through the appeasement mechanic; Mama Klara's recognition of the protagonist's origin is felt as weight, never explained, with no pre-Ch-76 reveal spoken [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0015] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].

cross_cultural_links seven L2 discovery gates originate here — the bull-sacrifice thread set-ups from Flores toward Egypt (LINK_0106), Mesopotamia (LINK_0107), Greece (LINK_0108), Rome (LINK_0109), and Mesoamerica (LINK_0110), and the architecture-proportion (LINK_0119) and unity-weaving (LINK_0137) progressions into Ch 4 Bali [SRC: T0_Cross_Cultural_Link_Graph @ LINK_0106] [SRC: T0_Cross_Cultural_Link_Graph @ LINK_0119].
main_quest_beat lift the lingko land-pressure, calm the roused land, and restore the untwisted proverb tradition (every fork direction plays through, none gating; path_bucket UNLOCKED); side_questlines SQ1 ADVANCE, SQ4 SEED (first advance rides in-chapter), SQ2 SEED, SQ9 ADVANCE (the cryptid lane advanced from its Ch-2 seed by the Anselmus hub telling and the deliberate Liang Bua read) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0032].
integrity_divergence typed at FORK_CH03_A (§10b) — the caci-duel conduct, the land-pressure resolution, and the land-contract restoration carry the chapter's single durable direction-set (Substantial class per §5.1), action-keyed, with the naga-tana appeasement and the caci rounds reward-both-ways boss outcomes (CH03_B05, CH03_B09); direction_set_at_chapter_end {generative trust returned and the land righted whole, neutral transactional or passed-through, corrosive a coldness the community reads}; the five texture bands are the DERIVED axis (§18, integrity_level L3 Drifting); convergence_node_id null (Ch 65 is the lock-in) [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1].
substrate_sources Erb (The Manggaraians — caci, mbaru niang, lingko, compang, healer-elder), Allerton (Potent Landscapes — the darat / naga tana potent-landscape substrate), and Forth (cross-applied from Ch 2), consolidated to the acquisition list and the Source registry (region_tags Flores / Manggarai / Indonesia, care tier standard) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 3] [POPULATE→T0_Source_Material_Registry].
rewards per-quest reward map authored in-intent — the permanent vril-floor raise, the caci technique, the ritual-botanical gather node, the freed-conscript allies, and the restored proverb lore; loot and seed anchors deferred [POPULATE→T0_RNG_Drop_Table] [POPULATE→T0_Quest_Seed_Registry].
encounter_mode/zone the caci rounds and the broker's unmasking before the assembled community at the Todo royal ground (CH03_B09→CH03_B10, the body-prose staging the beat graph resolves); the naga-tana confrontation at the Wae spring; the ritual at Mama Klara's waterfall; the deforestation skirmish at the lingko-edge forest; the inscription read at Liang Bua; the proverb duel and the contract restoration at the Compang plaza and fields — consistent with the typed site rows and the direct dominant mode [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 3].

End-state carry-forward (SSBL §9.3 — pins CH_04's start state; the authored fold over the beat/fork deltas)
protagonist_age: 9 (internal, designer-only, never surfaced; age_stage Childhood; per the resolved D-06 model).
age_stage: Childhood.
companions_present: no continuous traveling companion yet, but Ana (CHAR_0017) first appears as a recurring caci age-peer (recurs Ch 27/28/41) and the Healer's Child (CHAR_0002) begins the silent-observation companion arc that active-joins at Ch 13; Mama Klara is never a companion and stays behind.
familiars_present: Shell (W1) now bonded (the first chosen bond of the arc); the Child Familiar remains lost and believed dead (canonically escaped, Ch 58 reveal).
homes_established: none — the Manggarai village is a one-time waypoint, not a returnable home.
found_family: Shell (first bond); Ana the caci age-peer and the healer's-child companion arc both begin here; the Ch-2 Teresa (CHAR_0012) peer-glimpse carried into the community reception (a one-off, she does not travel on); Mama Klara recognized but a closed door; the healer's-child mystery active.
identity_hiding_status: ACTIVE_CONCEALMENT — a strategic discipline after first sustained human contact; pressure HIGH.
path_states: direction plus emerging magnitude set at FORK_CH03_A (generative trust returned and the land righted whole, neutral transactional or passed-through, corrosive a coldness the community reads), integrity_level L3 Drifting with path_bucket UNLOCKED (bands derived, never option labels); named NPCs now respond visibly to the protagonist's integrity.
Seam state-diffs (machine-checkable exit→entry assertions over ws state keys; the prose bridge stays in the transitions file)
The CH_02 → CH_03 seam (mirrors the committed CH_02 exit assertions):
assert ws.familiar_bond_state: shell_registered_no_bond at entry → the bond forms this chapter (CH03_B06) · ws.identity_hiding_status: FIRST_CONCEALMENT at entry, pressure MED→HIGH → strategic concealment begins this chapter (ACTIVE_CONCEALMENT by exit) · ws.integrity_score: per FORK_CH02_A (Accumulative direction set; the fork's direction informs the Manggarai standing and reception via the relationship/opportunity columns) · mark_carried: {manggarai mark per FORK_CH02_A} → the Ch-63 continental-revisit is the read node · homes: none (the Trade-6 substrate seeded via Emma; the ancient home roots at Ch 21) · ws.age_stage: Childhood (internal 9 at entry).
The CH_03 → CH_04 seam:
assert ws.familiar_bond_state: shell_bonded_first_chosen_bond (the Child Familiar still lost-believed-dead; the Ch-58 reveal held) · ws.identity_hiding_status: ACTIVE_CONCEALMENT, pressure HIGH at the Ch-4 entry (easing to MED across Bali's mask-normalized society) · ws.integrity_score: per FORK_CH03_A (Substantial direction-plus-magnitude set; the band still near L3 Drifting) · ws.community_state_per_region: manggarai per FORK_CH03_A → read jointly with the Ch-2 Kelimutu mark at the Ch-63 continental-revisit · companions: none traveling (Ana rooted to the region, recurring Ch 27/28/41; the healer's-child silent-observation arc active — the formal join waits at Ch 13) · homes: none (the Manggarai village a one-time waypoint; the Trade-6 substrate seeded via Ibu Martina, not rooted — the ancient home roots at Ch 21) · ws.age_stage: Childhood (internal 9).
Decisions surfaced
Ch 3 surfaced these; the grounded and creative-within-vision ones resolve here with reasoning (Josh-override-able at RR-12/RR-22), with one §17.1-consistency item flagged.
The potent-land restoration (the darat + naga tana, golden re-enrichment) — RESOLVED (ENRICHMENT_PROPOSAL STRONG): the sole supernatural being was a de-fanged "protective python"; the re-enrichment restores the Manggarai potent-landscape agency — the amoral darat and the soil-guardian naga tana, roused by the ritual-less lingko-edge clearing — so the land-grab is a spiritual as well as political transgression, resolved by restoring the sacrificial land-contract (appeasement, not slaying), grounded in Allerton [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 3].
Tombo Holes — the dukun-de-villainization consistency (RESOLVED, per the Ch 2 precedent): the RR-12-ratified sub-boss was framed as a "corrupted dukun," but the Ch 2 golden re-enrichment established that the benevolent dukun/healer role must not be cast as villain; applied here as a §17.1-safe reframe to a distinct twisted-word sorcerer (the role-label moved off the healer), with the name finalized to Tombo Holes in the standard NAMING_METHOD screening pass (the interim Ratu Balik-Kata removed the false royal title and the Ch-4 Bali register leak) [SRC: NAMING_METHOD] [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1].
Thread 11 scoring at Ch 3 — RESOLVED-carried (RR-12): the twisted-word sorcerer is the Ch-2-anchored Flores corrupted-trickster continuing (T1_Threads_22 scores Thread 11 at Ch 2, next Ch 12), so no new Ch-3 Thread-11 grid row is added; the scored Ch 3 set (Threads 1/2/3/5/13/14/17/21) stands — and the v3 beat graph accordingly carries no THREAD_11 beat join (the lineage note rides the §9 thin-index row) [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References].
Authored NPC names + the v2.5 golden re-enrichment — RESOLVED: the finalized names (Ngoéng Tana, Kaba Lomes, Poka Puar, Tombo Holes, Elder Tuan Bernardus) are carried per ruling 6; the v2.5 golden blocks (Civilizational marks, Key sites, Main quest beats, Side-questlines, Dialogue anchors, Anti-fringe, Asset anchors) were added and the D-06 age framing carried, matching the Ch 2 golden pattern [SRC: CHAPTER_BUILD_TARGET].
The v3 typing of the resolution direction-set — RESOLVED (v3 conversion, 2026-07-14; Josh-override-able at any RR): the v2.5 resolution bullet keyed the branch by the retired four labels (truly_good/good_enough/neutral/evil) across the caci conduct, the land-pressure resolution, and the contract restoration; v3.1 carries ONE durable Substantial-class fork (FORK_CH03_A at CH03_B11) with four ACTION-keyed options and directions, the naga-tana appeasement and the caci rounds typed as reward-both-ways boss outcomes (mandatory main-spine actions — a player fork would require inventing refuse-branches), and the retired vocabulary re-keyed wherever it appeared as a band or path label (the continuity anchor's "L3 Neutral band" → L3 Drifting with WS3 Neutral the world-state name; the mechanical-anchor path_state line; the SQ4 "SEED-to-ADVANCE" compound stage enum-forced to SEED with the texture kept in the row) [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1].
The caci-ground reconciliation — RESOLVED (a zone/site line the beat graph resolves): the v2.5 body prose stages the caci at the Todo royal ground (twice — the danced rounds and Ana's vouching) while the v2.5 encounter_mode/zone line placed "the caci duel and unmasking at the Compang plaza"; the beat graph resolves the caci rounds AND the unmasking to the Todo royal ground (the community assembles there, and the P2 whip arcs continue through the social round, so the boss does not change sites mid-phase), with the Compang plaza and fields hosting the proverb duel and the contract-restoration aftermath; the v2.5 joint site row (the Todo royal village and the forest edge) is split into two typed rows with the joint texture kept in env [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 3].
The Ch-3 boss registry re-ground — RESOLVED-APPLIED (grounded error-correction at the v3 conversion): the v3 FK join surfaced six drifted T0_Boss_Encounter cells — BE_0003_S1 still carried the retired protective-python framing (the row name; primary verb strike → attune; secondary verb attune → perceive; the guarding/breath-match phase wording → the roused-coil and contract-restoration wording; the constriction-lane counters → the attune/perceive counters) against the golden re-enrichment and BOSS_PERSONAS both holding the roused naga-tana potent-land framing (appeased not slain), and BE_0003_S3's phase text still said "the dukun's authority collapses," the exact HL_0005 dukun-villainization regression the Ch-2/Ch-3 goldens retired (→ "the manifested twist collapses") — each corrected to the value the spine and personas agree on, baseline-declared in the landing commit [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # boss_03_main] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005].
The Manggarai mark forward-track (IR-6 dependency) — RESOLVED-carried (connective web): the Ch-63 Pacific/Oceania continental-revisit reads the Ch-2 Kelimutu carved mark WITH the Ch-2/Ch-3 Manggarai community path_state (trust earned against a coldness the community reads), so FORK_CH03_A's mark_write is keyed to the manggarai community with forward_track [CH_63] and the reception dependence typed in the option rows — non-gating, per the committed CH_02 re-target [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_63].
The first-vril-gesture ring at CH03_B03 — RESOLVED-carried (connective web, batch-1 verify traceability note): the Ch-3 deliberate Liang-Bua inscription read is the ORIGIN of the first-vril-gesture ring the Ch-77 recharge-source closes — ratified in the whole-arc connections pass (WHOLE_ARC_CONNECTIONS_PASS.md, "the first-vril-gesture ring (Ch 3 cave to Ch 77 recharge-source)"), carried in the beat objective as an origin note with zero forward valence (no reveal content, no forward_track — a felt ring, not a mark).
The BE_0003_S1 target_type — DEFERRED-deliberate (batch-1 verify): the row keeps target_type fauna (the guardian rendered through a real reticulated python) though the class-sibling rows type folklore_malevolent_being; the naga-tana is a land-guardian appeased not slain — neither malevolent-being nor plain fauna fits cleanly, and the enum harmonization belongs to the post-v3 registry consistency audit (roadmap D-1) rather than a per-chapter cell edit; no new text propagates either reading [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0003_S1].
