Chapter 2 — Flores Island: Liang Bua Cave, the Soul-Eater, and the First Water

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (golden re-enrichment of the v2.4 build), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack and the ENRICHMENT_PROPOSAL malevolent-being restoration. Standard-care chapter (CVD §6.2); the §17.1 universal hard lines bind, and the living Flores traditions (Manggarai, Ngada, Lio, Nage) are represented with weight and as they understand themselves — the dukun restored to its true benevolent folk-healer role, the malevolence grounded in the region's own named evil being (the polo), never in a real healer or community. Reveal-timing note — no House-of-Velheim name, family, or pattern is surfaced (the corruption here predates the family entirely); the Grand Sage is dark. AMENDED 2026-07-27 (eleventh sitting) with the origin staging RULED: the realm object landed SCATTERED NEARBY and is recovered at the waking in a find-beat, CH02_B11 — a real playable search of the fall-strewn earth near the place the familiar is believed to lie, grief and recovery in one beat and the new world's first quiet work, with the opening's register untouched and the Ch-58 reveal protected by construction (the place itself stays out of the child's reach) [SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # RULED 2026-07-27 (eleventh sitting)]. Drafted is not canonical.

Entry header (schema per §9.5)

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3)

Ch 2 is the origin node of the build order: no predecessor spine entry feeds its start state, which derives instead from the Ch 1 canonical framework — a young elven child (Childhood stage; internal age 7, designer-only), the Child Familiar present, no companions, no established homes, vril-depleted on entry, integrity initialized at zero, concealment not yet an active mechanic, and no inventory in the acquisition sense — the one realm object that fell with them is a worn thing rather than a carried item, plain and uninscribed, unreadable and unidentified on this side of the barrier until the Ch-8 script reveal opens that door (HL_0095), and finite, because the King's Vril Restoration does not cross and so nothing in the realm can ever refill it, a scarcity that belongs to the fiction and never to a HUD; where inside Ch 2 the object comes back into the child's hands is RULED — it landed scattered nearby and is recovered at the waking in the find-beat CH02_B11, the search of the fall-strewn earth along the crack the familiar was watched dying beyond, near that place and never at it because the place itself stays out of the child's reach [SRC: T1_Story_Spine # CHAPTER 2] [SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # RULED 2026-07-27 (eleventh sitting)] [SRC: AMULET_PROVENANCE_BRIEF # Objects that cross] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0095]. The Ch 2 end state is the hard constraint that pins Ch 3's start: the Child Familiar believed dead by the player yet canonically escaped and alive (the reveal gates to the Truly Good path at Ch 58, held from every surface-track artifact before then); Shell the Water familiar encountered near the recharge waterfall as visual and vril-trace registration only, with bond formation deferred to Ch 3; her dormant attunement beginning to wake at the Neophyte vril-trace register (not Vril Sight — the Zelator-tier ability unlocking at the Ch 15 Egypt beat — and never the tier-6 Adeptus-Minor substrate read, which follows the Adept questline later still; per HL_0028, the registry's A_E3_002/A_E3_009 pair, and the D-06 inscription-scoped Ch-15 onset); a carved mark left at the Kelimutu waterfall cavern as an ancient→modern world-state anchor carried forward to the Ch-63 Pacific/Oceania continental-revisit (the Austronesian-expansion node cross-linked to Ch 2-5), re-targeted from the stale Ch-39 mis-link (Ch 39 is West Africa modern, not Flores) and read there with reception varying by the Ch-2/Ch-3 Manggarai path_state, non-gating [SRC: T1_Story_Spine # CHAPTER 2] [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_63].

Body prose

A small elven child wakes on cold stone in the dark of Liang Bua Cave, and the only warmth left in the world is the one small familiar that fell through the rift beside them. It bites once, hard, and bolts, and from a crack in the rock the child watches it die. The chapter opens in that exact register: arrival as loss, the first morning of a life that will be measured from a wound.

What the fall scattered, it scattered close. The child comes back to the crack with empty hands and works the loose earth the landing threw up along it — turning the stones over, feeling into the cold seams, following the line the scatter came to rest along, reading where the outside light reaches and where it stops — and cannot get through to the dark beyond the crack where the small shape went still, and does not stop trying to. What comes up out of that ground is the worn thing from home, the plain one that was in the familiar's mouth in the last ordinary minute of the old life. The child cleans it and puts it on. It is the first quiet work of the new world, done alone and unhurried, and the chapter offers no comfort with it beyond the fact of the thing in the hand: a small hard mercy at the exact place the first wound was made, and the beginning of the child's habit of looking.

On the worst night of that first emptied dark — no fire, nothing eaten — the black eases by a single shade, a faint lightening of the air with no source the child can find, no moon and no ember, gone before they can turn their head to it. They lay it to hungry eyes and do not think of it again.

Climbing out of the cave into the volcanic cone country beneath Mount Inerie, the child learns what the rift took — not a place but an atmosphere. They arrive emptied, and learn the thing every human born since the emptying already knows in the body: that vital force can be gathered back, that falling water gathers it. It is at a recharge waterfall, standing in the spray with their hands open, that the emptied vessel first fills again, and the realm the child came from and the world they woke in stop being two categories and become one continuous distance the child was never told existed. None of this is spoken. It is felt, through the hands, at the water.

And the island has its own word for what happens when that force is taken instead of given. There is a being the Nage and Lio name the polo — a witch that eats the vital force of others, that hollows a person from the inside and leaves the shape of them walking. One has its hooks in a hunter, and he tracks the child up through the cone country and along the ridges above the Kelimutu crater-lakes, reading the child's tracks the way a kind man might and turning that reading into a hunt. The thing driving him is older and hungrier than he is — the same emptiness the child carries, but weaponized, a soul-eater's bargain wearing a hollowed man. Surviving him, among the three colored lakes where the Lio say the dead go, is also a rescue, because the man is the polo's victim, not its author; the corruption is the enemy, and the hollowed hunter is the first person the child will fight to save rather than to kill. Concealment starts here, not as strategy but as reflex — the child learns to keep their own face turned from the firelight, because the island holds older watchers than the hunter, and not all of them mean well.

The three paths set their direction, not yet their weight. On the generative path the betrayal stays a wound carried whole; on the middle path it is swallowed unfelt; on the corrosive path it hardens into the first small permission to distrust — the same permission that a polo's bargain is built to exploit. By dusk the child has come down at last to the edge of a Manggarai village, where the lingko fields spread out from the center in their spider-web lines; they have climbed from the cave to the fields, have seen a force older than the emptiness beside water that fills what was drained, and have learned that attachment to this world is at least possible — the only mercy the chapter offers, and enough to carry them down into the village that waits below.

Threads advancing

Mirrored to the canonical Thread grid (the per-thread rows below, keyed THREAD_NN) and the per-chapter blocks of T1_Threads_22 (canonical-22 names, verified against the grid, never inferred) [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_02].

Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)

Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source; even at the arc's survival opener, Flores is rendered as a place its own people shaped and knew, not a blank wilderness [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)

Flores is authored as a hub in its documented web even at the opener — the island's own trade of gongs and ikat, its Austronesian sea-lineage, and the deep-time hominin stratum beneath the living present — never a blank survival wilderness [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].

Key sites and spatial layout

Story-load-bearing sites, each having cleared a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the World Geography Master, never the RCM [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 2] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture.

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)

Sub-bosses across different threads feed one main boss; every fight is blended, primary-and-secondary-verb, three-axis, with phase escalation that evolves the moveset [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078], and a reward on win and on death per the T1_Combat failure-states rule [SRC: T1_Combat_System_Spec].

§10 · Beat graph (was: 5 prose bullets → 10 typed v3.1 beats at the v3 conversion → now: 11 typed v3.1 beats after the 2026-07-27 eleventh-sitting amendment; reveal HELD on every beat)

Beat-scale mode_variety (folds to the chapter mode_variety_check): eleven beats after the amendment — combat CH02_B03/CH02_B07/CH02_B08 · puzzle CH02_B02/CH02_B06 · learning CH02_B04 · stealth CH02_B05 · character CH02_B01/CH02_B10 · transformation CH02_B09 · discovery CH02_B11 → projected five combat=Y; puzzle=Y; learning=Y; character=Y; transformation=Y, earned by named beats and unchanged by the amendment (discovery projects to the LEARNING letter per the SPINE_SCHEMA_v3 §4 mode-projection table, and learning=Y is already earned by CH02_B04, so the find-beat adds a carrier and moves no letter; the refreshed beat count is a registry-lane edit on the Chapter_Index row, flagged here rather than written by hand). dominant_combat_mode environmental (the survival-horror register — the stalk, the fauna, the deep-cave press) [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_02]. Thread-join note: THREAD_04 (Flood Memory) advances at chapter-ambient level (the Threads block), no single carrier beat — deliberate; THREAD_20 (Sacred Objects) is a NEW carrier here, joined at CH02_B11 by the amendment, so a THREAD_20 / CH_02 grid row is the registry follow-through this entry implies and does not itself write; every other chapter thread is joined to a named beat.

Side-questlines (§11 — machine gate + beat interleave)

Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)

The Flores community is protected: the §17.1 line is absolute on combat against the Manggarai, Ngada, Lio, and Nage and their knowledge-holders as such — and, critically, the dukun (a real, benevolent folk-healer role) is NOT the antagonist; the earlier build's dukun-as-corruptor framing is retired, the malevolence re-grounded in the tradition's own named evil being, the polo [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0123]. All combat routes against the corrupted individual (Rangku Wera, whom the fight frees), the polo (the soul-eater witch, a malevolent folkloric being, never a living person), the Ebu Gogo (a mythic wild-folk ambient threat, evaded rather than hunted and fought only when one corners the child, and never replaying the extermination), and fauna. The polo and the Ebu Gogo are drawn as the Nage and Lio traditions hold them, never as zombie-horror or cinema shorthand [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005].

Decisions surfaced

Ch 2 surfaced these; the grounded and creative-within-vision ones resolve here with reasoning (Josh-override-able at RR-12), and no cardinal un-decidable is open. The one staging sub-point the 2026-07-27 sixth-sitting ruling left open at the end of this block is now RULED and APPLIED (the eleventh sitting), and the record of the three stagings is kept beneath it so a later pass reads a closed call rather than an open one.

State-key wiring addendum (APPENDED 2026-08-05 -- the two consequences this chapter carries now have keys)

Appended and never inserted: this entry is cited by line number from other lanes' surfaces, so no line

above this heading moves. The amendments below are authoritative over the inline beat contracts they

name, and the mechanical re-anchor that puts the same tokens on those contracts' own lines is boarded

rather than taken here, because those lines are line-cited by the flores_island art boards and this

lane does not re-fingerprint another lane's pointers.

The chapter made two consequences real and named neither of them a key, so the client counted them and

flagged the absence instead of inventing a name. Both keys are now minted in T0_Worldstate_Variables and

both writers are named, so the counters become durable state.

monotonic. WRITTEN AT CH02_B03 ON THE FOUGHT ROUTE ONLY: stepping the constriction lane or attuning

the breath opens the source intact and writes nothing; fighting the guardian down in the shallows

opens the same water and costs one mark. Both are wins and the mark is the price of the easier one,

which is the beat's own sentence. The same write is named on T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry BE_0002_S1

ws_writes. The amendment to the beat's state line is to add ws.serpent_reverence_marks to its out map

on the fought route. It is not an integrity tax and never touches ws.integrity_score.

with TWO writers. The handback asked whether this is one track or two and the evidence answers it:

both sources state the same predicate about the same place read at the same moment. WRITER ONE is

CH02_B05, where a cornered child who has run out of room puts an Ebu Gogo down to survive, hard and

costly, after which the deep layers are more dangerous. WRITER TWO is BE_0002_S2's death_reward, where

the wa reaches the light, the hunter it hollowed stays hollowed one beat longer, and the deep layers

are more dangerous on the next descent. Evading the stalk cleanly writes NOTHING -- evasion is the

register and the right play, so the pressure is the price of survival-by-force and never a tax on

being hunted. The amendment is to add the key to CH02_B05's out map on the cornered put-down. The

floor clauses are untouched at every value: the deep layers are never a hunting ground, the villagers'

cave-burning is never replayed, and the read is ambient danger on the next descent and never a gate.

Where the light is at Liang Bua (RULED 2026-08-05 -- the answer to the game-repo handback TODO_CANON 17)

CH02_B06 frames phase two's fail state spatially: the wa is loose in the Liang Bua dark and has to be

put down before it reaches the light. The build staged that as a clock because no light-anchor had been

named. It is named here, and it is CITED rather than invented -- the zone's own authored geometry

already carries it.

THE ANCHOR IS THE LIANG BUA CAVE MOUTH. It is a real authored feature of this zone's terrain and not a

new one: the region page's own terrain build recipe carves the Liang Bua cave mouth as a scripted

composite (flores_island.md L105), and the Zone Catalog states both halves the mouth sits between --

a 220 by 180 by 60 karst interior and a 400 m forest approach (flores_island.md L51). The site row says

the same thing in play terms: low-light navigation inside, monsoon-forest approach outside

(docs/spine/CH_02.md L84). The mouth is the seam between them, and the daylight there is a real light

already in the scene rather than an authored glow, which is what the D1-27 light law asks of any bright

thing in this game.

THE CLOCK BECOMES A DISTANCE. The wa is a NIGHT form -- the poti ngeping -- so reaching daylight is it

escaping the one condition that holds it, which is why the fail state was written spatially in the

first place. The fail is therefore the wa reaching the mouth, and the two counters the encounter already

carries are what stop it: break line of sight against the mata mbere tell, and strike when the red eye

commits. The dark between is the unlit karst chamber the chapter already rows -- concealment that runs

two ways, which the stalking beat's own row states is the pressure rather than a hazard to remove.

BE_0002_S2's counters cell now names the denial in terms, so the encounter contract carries the goal

and not only the timer. What this does NOT change: the beat completes either way with no dead end, the

win yields the corruption-residue reagent and the loss yields the death_reward, and the illustrative

45-second figure stays the engine's tuning constant rather than becoming canon -- Phase-5M owns the

number, canon owns the geometry.

WHAT THIS RULING DOES NOT MINT. No new site row, no new zone, no new environment-grammar row, and no

back-edge into the region page's zone catalog: the mouth is already in the zone's authored geometry and

this ruling names it rather than adding to it. If a later pass wants the mouth as its own

environment-grammar surface, that row's back-edge lands with the region-page pass that owns that line.

What the build can and cannot resolve today, said plainly (AMENDED 2026-08-05)

The handback asked for a SITE ID or a ZONE-CATALOG FEATURE the clock could be replaced by, and this

ruling should not have been read as supplying one. It does not. The correction is stated here rather

than left for the build to discover.

WHAT IS RESOLVABLE. The zone is, and the zone is liang_bua_cave. Its site row types the interior as

low-light navigation and the outside as a monsoon-forest approach; the Zone Catalog states both halves

the mouth sits between, a karst interior and a forest approach at the stated dimensions; and the

region page's terrain build recipe carves the mouth as a scripted composite. So the ANCHOR the fail

state reads is a real, cited, authored piece of that zone's geometry, and a build can seat it at the

interior-to-approach seam of liang_bua_cave without inventing anything.

WHAT IS NOT RESOLVABLE, AND THIS IS THE HONEST HALF. There is no id to bind to. The mouth carries no

site_id, no environment-grammar id, and no Zone Catalog feature row of its own -- the catalog entry

lists the zone's bounds and its environment-grammar refs, and the mouth is named in build-recipe prose

rather than as a feature the schema can join. Any build that needs a JOINABLE key still has none, and

naming the seam is not the same as minting the key.

THE SITE-CELL MISMATCH, NAMED RATHER THAN INHERITED SILENTLY. CH02_B06's site cell reads

kelimutu_crater_lakes, which is where the bargain is offered and refused, while the anchor this ruling

names sits inside liang_bua_cave's geometry, which is where the beat's own objective puts phase two --

loose in the Liang Bua dark. The split is PRE-EXISTING and inherited from the beat's own authored

prose, not created here. PHASE TWO RESOLVES IN liang_bua_cave. A build resolving the light anchor from

the beat's site cell alone would land in the wrong zone, so it must read the beat's phase rather than

its site cell, and this sentence is the binding statement of that. The clean repair is a per-phase

site binding on the beat contract; it is not taken here because that beat line is line-cited by

another lane's surface, and it rides with whichever pass owns those pointers.

WHAT THIS AMENDMENT CHANGES. Nothing mechanical. No id is minted, no beat line is edited, no site row

moves, and the fail state, the counters and the no-dead-end guarantee above all stand exactly as

ruled. What changes is that the ask is now answered honestly on both halves rather than on the half

that could be met.
