Chapter 1 — The Child: The Elven Childhood, the Four Choosings, and the Fall Out of the World

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (authored to docs/proposals/CHAPTER_BUILD_TARGET.md and the v2.5 twenty-block anchor-hub schema), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the canonical origin (T3_Core §2.1 — the protagonist an elf, the King's heir; §2.2 the Chapter-1 character creation, the four player selections; §2.3 the biography parameter system, the integrity score initialized at zero here; §6.4 the sovereign faculties given in the Prologue and STRIPPED at this rift fall), the FINALE enrichment framework (docs/proposals/FINALE_FAIRY_ENRICHMENT.md, the Ch-1 brief), the RULED Prologue/Ch-1 emotional spine (the third sitting — the mother's amulet passed to the child at the birth, the loss days-to-weeks later, the time jump into a childhood some of the realm's people blame the child for, the best friend's constancy, the dumb fight), the RULED Ch-1 ending sequence (the sixth sitting — the chapter's quests and story and familiar bonding and friendship-making COMPLETE first, then the last morning: the amulet taken off the neck in the sun, the familiar's keep-away, the chase into the woods, the rift), the RULED vibrational-gravity physics (the seventh sitting — high-vibrational beings draw rifts, the ward counters the draw; design register only, shown in staging and never narrated as law) and the integration plan it lands through (docs/proposals/AMULET_PROVENANCE_BRIEF.md §6), the Ch-2 canonical start-state it pins (a young elven child, internal age 7, the Child Familiar present, vril-depleted, integrity zero, in the Flores cave), and the inverted-changeling deep-research (the royal fairy child lost OUT of the realm with no swap — a loss that strips rather than a theft that enriches; the taken-by-the-fairies grief-without-a-corpse; the fairy-time polarity flip, the ceiling stripped on impact; the origin that reframes in hindsight with no forward hint). This IS a hard-line node (canonical_hard_line_flag TRUE — the eighteen-node set; the origin that reframes everything). THE PLAYABLE POV IS THE CHILD (the protagonist); the four player selections (the Child Familiar from the twelve, the best friend, appearance and gender presentation, the player name) are woven as childhood, not a menu. SHOW-DON'T-TELL IS ABSOLUTE: nothing of the game's thesis or the Grand Sage is shown, hinted, or foreshadowed; the best friend (who echoes the later healer's-child companion) and the Child Familiar (the later reunion-familiar) are fully-present childhood relationships with ZERO forward valence; the rift-fall reads in the moment as rupture and accident, never as curse or consequence or omen (the Oisín fall-rhyme a hindsight gift, never staged) — no line, cue, or camera on any PLAYER-FACING surface may present the chase, the argument, or the ward coming off the neck as the cause, and the blame the child feels (and the blame some of the realm's grieving people lay) is never the narration's verdict; at DESIGN register the ward off the neck is the ruled lawful mechanism (the seventh sitting — the strongest magnet in the realm unwarded in the open), and it is never narrated, never declared, and never made legible to the player here. The inverted-changeling material is held with care (CVD §17.1) — the fallen child a king's heir robbed of a birthright, diminished by circumstance and NEVER framed as lesser or wrong; no defective-substitute imagery is imported. The Celtic Otherworld traditions are honored as Layer-2 reference, echoed never lifted; the vril reads mathematical, physical, substrate, never race-mystical (the Vril-Society firewall, authorial). Ch 1's end state pins the Ch-2 start state exactly. Drafted is not canonical.

Body prose

The child is the player now, and the realm is a child's whole world — which is to say it is everything, and it is safe, and it will always be this way. Everything, except for the one person who is not in it. She was gone before there was any memory to keep her in, and what is left of her is a small worn thing on a cord at the child's throat, which the realm says was hers and which the child has never once taken off.

There is time, in a place where there is always time, to become someone. The choosings do not feel like choosings; they feel like growing up. Among the twelve great luminous animals the King keeps his mind open to, one comes to the child more than the others — the player's to settle on — and the settling is a small ceremony and a large love: of all the kinds of wonderful thing to have beside you, this is the one, and it chooses back, and after that it is simply always there, a warmth at the child's side that has a heartbeat and a mind and a way of being glad. There is a best friend, too, the way there is in any childhood, the one the days are spent beside; and there is the slow settling of who the child is — the face and the bearing the player gives them, the way they will carry themselves, and the name they are called across the flowering plain, which the player gives them and which the whole realm learns. None of it is a menu. All of it is a life.

And it is a good life, and it is allowed to be only that, for as long as it lasts. The child runs the endless bloom with the familiar at their heels and the best friend at their side; learns the small magics a child of the realm learns, nowhere near the King's sovereign ceiling but bright with the promise of it; is held in the fullness of a place where nothing is scarce and no one is afraid. Whatever the rest of the long road will be spent aching toward, they are given it here first, freely, as the plain and simple condition of a childhood — and they are given it without a single word that it will ever end.

Not everyone in the realm is glad of the child. Some of its people cannot look at them without doing the arithmetic grief does when it needs somewhere to land: she died on the day the sky went wrong and the newborn lived, and so the newborn is what is left to hold it against. They are not cruel and they are not enemies. They are people who lost someone in a place that had never lost anyone, and they carry it badly, and they turn a little away in the doorways and along the market rows, and a child learns the shape of a turned shoulder very early. Nothing in the realm says they are right. The child's father never says it and never thinks it. The child hears it anyway, the way children hear the things nobody says to them.

And one person never turns. The best friend is there through all of it, at the door and out on the plain and in the long light of every afternoon, not because anything obliges them to be but because they simply are — the one who stayed while others turned. That is the whole of it, and it is enough to make a childhood happy, and the child, who is a child, never once thinks to say so out loud.

So the days are spent the way good days are spent. There are the small errands of a realm at peace and the tasks a young heir is trusted with; there are the deep places of the plain to be gotten into and out of again, the water and the stone and the high air, the things a child can do with the small magics and the things they cannot do yet and keep trying anyway; there is the familiar, who is faster than the child and knows it; and there are the woods at the edge of the child's range, where the light comes down in pieces and where two children and a familiar have worn a hundred paths that nobody else uses. Years of it. The child spends it without once suspecting that it is the thing they will spend the rest of their life trying to get back to.

And then, on one ordinary day, they have a fight about nothing. The friend has seen the turned shoulders too, and says so — clumsily, kindly, trying to help, the way you try to help someone you love when you have no idea how. And the child does what they have started doing whenever anything gets close to it: they close, and they get sharp about something that is not the thing, and they say the sentence that is built to end a conversation, and then they walk off across the plain and do not look back. The friend calls after them once. The child keeps going. Nobody is a villain in it and nobody apologizes either, and the day closes with it still sitting there, unmended, and the child takes it to bed the way you take that kind of thing to bed.

Morning comes in through the window the way it always does. The child wakes into the ordinary warm dark of their own room with the sun laid in a long bar across the bed and, still lying there, does what they have never done: lifts the cord over their head to look at the thing on the end of it. It is small and worn and it was hers. The child turns it in the light, breathes on it, rubs it clear against the blanket, holds it up to the sun again — the closest thing to sitting with her they have ever had — and is still doing it when the familiar comes up over the edge of the bed, takes it neatly out of their fingers, and goes.

Out the door and gone, and the child is laughing before they are properly upright, because this is a game they have played a thousand times, because the familiar always lets them get close enough to believe it, because there is nothing in this world for them to be afraid of. Down through the house and out into the morning, across the plain with the familiar just ahead and glancing back to be sure the chase is still on, in under the trees and along the worn paths and deeper, laughing the whole way. There is nothing in this morning that says otherwise, and nothing anywhere in it that asks the child to brace; the only thing in the whole bright day that is not right is the thing said out on the plain yesterday, and there is all the time in the world to go and say something better.

It is not a punishment and it is nothing the child did. Out among the trees, with the amulet swinging from the familiar's mouth and the child six steps behind it, the air in one place goes wrong — nothing coming, nothing aimed, simply the world giving way where the two of them happen to be — and the depleted dark on the other side of everything opens and reaches in. There is a wrongness and a pull and no time at all. The child is going through, and the familiar with them, and the small worn thing that was hers going with them both, the three of them falling out of the full world and into the starved one. On the far side the world is not bright and it is not full: the air has no vril in it, the light comes only from somewhere and only so far, and the fall does not deposit the child gently — it strips them, on the instant of crossing, the whole saturating birthright torn away in the single moment the depleted ground takes their weight, so that what lands in the cold and the dark of a cave in a starved world is a small elven child with nothing of the ceiling left to them, and a familiar that fell with them and is somewhere in the dark, and no way back that anyone will show them.

The realm, behind them, feels it as a taking. The King, at the very height of everything he can do, could not hold the world shut around them — and there is no comfort offered, no promise the door will open again, because to those left on the bright side of it the child is simply gone into the other world, away and not dead and not fetchable. A father who has now lost both of them stands in a whole and shining kingdom in which there is nothing left to do. That is where the long road begins: not with a hero setting out, but with a child fallen out of everything, in the dark, at the bottom of the whole long way back.

Key sites and spatial layout

Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture; the realm is the game's own dimensional space at a child's scale, its register anchored to the World Geography Master [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # 9].

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)

Pillar-8 at the origin runs environmental by design: the chapter's encounter is a dimensional rupture — NOT an antagonist and NOT a person — so there is no boss-adversary here and none is invented; the playable rift-fall is the set-piece (the environmental-boss protocol satisfying the hard-line combat-layer requirement without a manufactured foe, HL_0051), the wound made real so the seventy-five-chapter climb back to the ceiling lands [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_01] [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # 6.4].

Valley-rider check (eighth sitting, arc-wide): the chapter is a VALLEY and carries real playable L1 content across CH01_B11 (the childhood's quests, errands, and deep places) and CH01_B14 (the keep-away chase) — the rider is answered with fun, never with a manufactured foe, since Ch 1 has no antagonist by canon. The Chapter_Index cell reads combat=Y;puzzle=N;learning=N;character=Y;transformation=Y — combat=Y is the pre-v3 encounter-present letter (the BE_01 fall is the chapter's playable encounter) and learning=N under-counts the CH01_B06 small-magics beat the v2.5 entry carries; two vocabularies over one truth, not a value drift (see Decisions) [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_01]. Thread-join note: THREAD_06 (Dying-Rising) is carried at CH01_B01 (the childhood fullness the fall strips) and CH01_B08 (the fall — the dying-rising begins), and THREAD_01 (Vril Parallels) at CH01_B06 (the vril ceiling in the child's small magics) and CH01_B08 (the fall — the vril economy inverts to the depleted floor) — the grid's two origin anchors; THREAD_02 (Serpent) and THREAD_05 (World Axis) are origin-ambient (build-derived), block-level in the Threads block with no carrier beat — deliberate; THREAD_03 (Antagonist) and THREAD_04 (Flood Memory) are NOT_PRESENT (no antagonist and no flood-memory content on any surface) [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_01].

Protected-chapter / living-culture framing (§17.1, standard care, the show-don't-tell absolute and the inverted-changeling care)

Ch 1 depicts no living Earth community — the realm is the game's own fairy-realm space — but it honors the real Celtic Otherworld and changeling folklore and carries the arc's absolute show-don't-tell discipline and the inverted-changeling care. The childhood-abundance register (Mag Mell, Tír na nÓg, the fullness of the realm) and the changeling / stolen-child / taken-by-the-fairies traditions (Thompson F321/F377; the grief-without-a-corpse of a child who is "away") are honored each on its own terms as Layer-2 reference and echoed never lifted — no proper noun of the source tradition enters the game's own fiction, the realm keeps its own game-canon names, and no deity-name rests on the King (HL_0099). The inverted-changeling material is held with CARE (CVD §17.1): the historical changeling belief was a folk explanation used to justify cruelty toward disabled, ill, or neurodivergent infants, and the inversion is the care-safe move — there is NO defective substitute, nothing left in the crib, and the fallen child is a king's heir robbed of a birthright, diminished by CIRCUMSTANCE and NEVER framed as lesser, marked, or wrong; the ravenous-wizened-substitute imagery is not imported onto the protagonist. SHOW-DON'T-TELL is ABSOLUTE: nothing of the thesis or the Grand Sage is shown, hinted, or foreshadowed; the best friend (who in hindsight echoes the healer's-child companion) and the Child Familiar (the later reunion-familiar) carry ZERO forward valence — fully-present childhood relationships; and the rift-fall reads in the moment as rupture and accident, never as curse or consequence or omen (the Oisín fall-rhyme is a hindsight gift, never staged as a fall-and-instant-aging consequence). The vril reads mathematical, physical, substrate — never race-mystical (the Vril-Society firewall, authorial-only). The realm's own people are held with the same care the entry gives every other community: the ones who blame the child are GRIEVING and not cruel, they are never scored, targeted, or made villains, the narration never once endorses them, and the fair-folk kingdom stays the honored place the whole arc aches back toward — a court turned petty would cost the Prologue's plenitude retroactively. No antagonist, no House of Velheim, no pattern exists on any surface — the rift's opening is unexplained, unauthored, unaimed, unnamed, and the physics that makes it lawful is design register only (shown in the staging, never narrated as a law and never declared as thesis) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0116] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0099].

Ch 1 is a canonical hard-line node (the eighteen-node set; the origin that reframes everything), built last and read first. The grounded resolutions are surfaced here with reasoning shown (per the resolve-don't-defer contract; the origin structure and the four selections are canon, T3_Core §2.2, implemented not invented).
