Region Page — East African Rift Valley

Canonical region page (T1_Region_Page_Template [ACTIVE v2.0]), built to the flores_island v2.0

model. It consumes the v3.1 spine's typed layer for CH_10 and authors only the region-scope

substrate the spine leaves downstream. The region's identity resolves in T0_Region_Index; the page

passes harness/check_region_page.py. Reveal discipline binds at page grain exactly as at spine

grain: Thread 3 is NOT_PRESENT here, no antagonist family name, form, operative or pattern appears

anywhere on the page, and the reveal authority is dark. The living peoples of this valley — the

Hadza of the Lake-Eyasi shore, the Sandawe of the Kondoa country, the Maasai of the Rift floor and

highlands — are a living present, never a relic and never a window onto anyone's past; and the

Southern-San peoples reached through the chapter's deep-time current — the /Xam, the //Gwi, and the

Ju|'hoansi — are three distinct self-naming traditions, never flattened into one and never carried

under the colonial exonym. This page's defining condition is stated plainly at the top rather than

discovered in Section 16: the processed corpus does not yet hold this region. Every section

below therefore separates what the spine has ratified as canon, what a cited source actually

attests, and what is honestly absent. page_status: priority.

Region Identity

Care-register note, recorded because the planning brief for this page said standard and the live

canon says otherwise. T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10 carries cultural_depiction_compliance "high care" and

consistency_risk_tier "high"; every one of the four T0_Boss_Encounter rows staged here

(BE_0010, BE_0010_S1, BE_0010_S2, BE_0010_S3) carries care_tier high; and the CH_10 spine header

reads cultural_depiction_tier high for the living San traditions. The page therefore renders at HIGH

care throughout. That is a registry reading, not an inflation: the reason the tier is high is that

this chapter touches two separate classes of living community — the Rift's own foragers and

pastoralists, and three Southern-San peoples — with almost no evidence behind either, which is

exactly the condition under which a careless page does harm.

Zone Catalog

One row per zone. Rows sourced from spine §3b site_ids copy terrain / functions / ambient_threat /

vril_density / climactic_affordance / protected VERBATIM from the CH_10 site rows; the page-authored

columns are the page-side geometry (area_bounds, zone_bounds_wgs84) and build_priority plus the T0.2

extension-column pack. area_bounds are first-pass design sizings (meters), refined at the Section 1

terrain-build pass; they are page authority, not spine canon.

Two rows in this catalog carry no spine site and are declared on the face of the table as

region-ambient (page-authored): serengeti_plain_margin and gorge_rim_bench. On those two rows every

column is page authority, including the six the spine owns elsewhere, and none of their values is

copied from anything. The declaration matters because the verbatim rule above cannot be true for a row

with no source row to be verbatim from, and an undeclared page-authored row is how a zone catalog

quietly grows a site the typed layer never ratified. Both are also written as a FEED to the spine's

site pass, which is where they become spine-owned or are dropped.

Zone-bounds derivation note. Four boxes take a real anchor and two take none, and the difference is

deliberate rather than an omission. The olduvai_gorge, serengeti_plain_margin and gorge_rim_bench

envelopes are padded around the registry's Olduvai centroid 2.9886°S 35.3500°E, and rift_lakes_system

is padded around the registry's Turkana centroid 3.5500°N 36.1000°E [SRC: T0_Region_Index @

rift_valley]. The bale_mountains_astral_threshold box takes the RCM's Bale highland-zone latitude of

6.83°N with a page-authored longitude, and lake_eyasi_shore takes a page-authored anchor on the

Eyasi shore, because neither carries a registry coordinate; both are flagged to the terrain pass and

neither is presented as registry canon [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10].

The two blank envelopes are the load-bearing case. juhoansi_camp and san_rock_art_panels are the

continuity stratum: the spine reaches them through the valley's deep-time-fluctuation current, and

their real ground is roughly nine thousand kilometres south of the Rift, in the Cape, the

Drakensberg and the Kalahari [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]. Giving them Rift coordinates would write a

falsehood into the geodesy layer and would also quietly annex two living peoples' country into a

region that is not theirs. Their real-ground geodesy belongs to the Ch-13 South Africa page, and this

page defers it there rather than inventing it. What this page owns is their staging as reached

strata: the approach, the light, the panel geometry, and the discipline that governs them.

Column-scale note, so the table is not misread against the page's declared register. The care_tier

column runs on the live two-value zone scale, standard and elevated, which is what all sixty-nine zone

rows across the ten region pages carry and the only scale the column has ever held. The page's HIGH

care register comes from the chapter and registry layer above it — cultural_depiction_compliance,

consistency_risk_tier, and the four boss rows — and it binds every zone here regardless of the column

value. A standard in this column marks a zone with no living-community or sacred surface of its own,

including the boss-hosting olduvai_gorge, whose care weight rides the boss row rather than the ground;

it is never a relaxation of the chapter's register.

Zone-grain node-class note. The region row's node_class is unpopulated and the page does not fill it

from convenience. The honest default for this region is protected — six of the eight zones sit on

living or continuity-living ground and two of those are protected sacred art — and that is carried

as the recommendation to the node-class pass rather than asserted here. No transferable sublane is

asserted for any zone: this region carries no persisting apparatus a successor could fill, because it

carries no antagonist apparatus at all.

The two page-authored rows, and why they are not the Kondoa case. Both are page-side splits of ground

the spine already narrates inside olduvai_gorge, whose env row reads a deep stratigraphic gorge with a

savanna approach and carries a passing modern-era research window on the same ground, hosting the

descent hook, the fauna guardian and the exit climb [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]. serengeti_plain_margin

is that approach given its own transit band so the gorge head has something to be approached from, and

gorge_rim_bench is the overlook the same env already implies. Neither adds a place, a people or a

culture the typed layer does not carry, and both sit at P2 behind every spine site. Kondoa is the

opposite case in every respect and is refused: it is a named place in its own right, it belongs to a

living people, T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10 carries it in region_secondary as part of the ratified D-12

addition, and there is no §3b site row for it, so no zone may cite it. Minting a Kondoa zone would put

page authority on another community's ground, which is precisely what a page with no Sandawe substrate

must not do. The gap goes to the spine's site pass as a FEED, alongside the two rows above, and Section

4 records the deeper reason it should not be closed in a hurry: there is no Sandawe substrate in the

corpus at all.

The Twenty Numbered Sections

Section 1 — Geography and Topography

The East African Rift is a continental rift system, and the chapter's whole spatial argument is that

it is a place that has been keeping records for longer than anyone has been able to read them. Four

kinds of ground carry that argument. Olduvai Gorge is a river ravine in northern Tanzania on the

eastern Serengeti margin, cut down through stacked sediment beds whose faces are the record itself

[SRC: SRC_00186, p. 25]. The Rift lakes chain runs the length of the system — Turkana at 3.55°N,

Lake Tanganyika at roughly 6.0°S, Victoria at roughly 1.0°S, Bogoria at 0.25°N, Naivasha at 0.77°S —

soda basins and freshwater sweeps side by side [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10]. The Bale

highland at roughly 6.83°N is the Afromontane ceiling above the valley, cold and thin-aired, and is

geographically Ethiopian while sitting in this chapter's narrative context [SRC:

T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10]. And the continuity stratum's panels and camp are reached rather

than travelled to.

The lake chain is where this region meets the compressed-geography travel ruling head-on. Turkana to

Tanganyika is on the order of fifteen hundred kilometres of real ground, and the chapter plays the

chain as a single traversable corridor of five staged shore segments rather than as a survey of

East Africa. The compression is the design, not a shortcut: the player walks a Rift that reads as one

continuous floor because that is what the chapter is about, and the real distances stay in the

journal rather than in the walk.

Terrain data plus the build chain. DEM source Copernicus GLO-30 via the OpenTopography API over the

chapter bounding boxes; meters-per-vertex a per-region compression decision, first-pass 2 m/vertex

at the gorge and the panel gallery and 10 m/vertex across the plain margin and the lake corridor,

with the ruled per-region value a Josh number; a GDAL and rasterio recipe carves the gorge section

faces and the shelter apron as scripted composites, because a stacked-bed exposure is the one

landform in this region whose readability is the gameplay; a Gaea erosion pass adds the gully-and-fan

detail an arid section face actually carries; UE Landscape import tiles under World Partition at the

8,129-vertex actor cap; ESA WorldCover maps savanna, bare-soil and open-water landcover to

material-layer weightmaps.

Time-period modifications from modern. The African Humid Period is the region's largest geographic

transformation and it is playable rather than described: the basins fill, the shorelines climb, and

the ground between the lakes goes green. The scale is real and is carried from the RCM — Lake

Megachad reached roughly 350,000 square kilometres at its peak against roughly 1,500 today, which is

the number that makes the flood-memory thread specific rather than atmospheric [SRC:

T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10]. The deep-time window reaches the hominin strata as geology; the

modern window is a research-era overlay on the same rim. Climate and atmosphere: equatorial-highland

to semi-arid, seismically live, with the soda basins running their own chemistry.

Vril sites: none rowed at Ch 10. The chapter's vril content is a geological accumulation across deep

human-evolution time rather than a site-bound recharge, so no T0_Vril_Site row anchors here and

baseline recharge carries from the Ch-3 floor [SRC: T0_Vril_Site_Registry @ VS_CH03_001]. The

generative Vril-Sites asset category is therefore empty for this region.

Section 2 — Flora and Botany

This section is the page's first honest gap and it is declared as one. The processed corpus holds no

botanical or ethnobotanical source for this region at all. A literal scan of all 661,081 indexed

substrate chunks returns zero occurrences of honeyguide and zero of any Bale or Rift plant term the

chapter would need, against a working control on the same scan (olduvai returns nineteen hits, all

in one source), so the absence is a real absence rather than a failed query.

What the page may therefore carry is what the spine has already ratified, cited as spine canon and

not dressed up as ethnobotany: the baobab stands the Hadza work at the Eyasi shore, named in the

CH_10 body prose alongside the bow and the honeyguide [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]. The savanna and

Afromontane vegetation structure — thorn scrub and open grass on the plain margin, giant-heath and

tussock at the Bale bench — is authorial general geography, is marked as authorial on this page, and

carries no species list, no preparation, and no use claim.

The consequence for the trade lane is stated rather than smoothed. The spine seats an arrow-poison

pharmacopoeia here as the Herbalism substrate deepener, and the corpus attests none of it. The scan

is reported exactly as it came back. Diamphidia returns zero and the hyphenated arrow-poison returns

zero; the two-word arrow poison returns four hits, and none of the four is Rift or San pharmacopoeia

content — two are Sri Lankan ethnobotany entries, one describing a Congo bark preparation and one an

index line under arrow poisons [SRC: SRC_00242], and two are bibliographic pointers inside a

snake-symbolism study, one of them a pointer at the Drakensberg San arrow-poison literature by way of

a Ciba Symposium volume [SRC: SRC_00473, p. 304]. That last one is an acquisition lead rather than a

source, and it is logged as such in the Section-16 brief. No plant, no larva, no preparation, and no

dose is authored on this page. The Trade-4 content this region owes is therefore an acquisition,

recorded in Section 16, and the hold is a sourcing gap rather than a softening — the pharmacopoeia

returns at full weight the moment a primary source anchors it.

Build notes: foliage source-assets favour acacia-and-commiphora savanna and Afromontane heath

matches; density low on the plain margin, banded along the lake shores, and tight at the Bale bench;

palette dust-gold shifting to grey-green with altitude and to a saturated pink at the soda shallows;

wind steady on the plain, gusting hard at the rim and at the Bale bench.

Section 3 — Fauna and Animal Life

The region's fauna is already staged in T0_Creature_Roster and the page CONSUMES those rows and

FEEDS region-ambient detail rather than minting new ones. The rowed set is the African fish eagle

(CR_0047), the Ethiopian wolf (CR_0051), the African lion (CR_0056), the cheetah (CR_0057), the

African leopard (CR_0058), the spotted hyena (CR_0059), the Nile crocodile (CR_0060, Thread 2), the

African wild dog (CR_0061), the African bush elephant (CR_0062), the giraffe (CR_0063), the zebra

(CR_0064), and the blue wildebeest (CR_0065).

The one combat encounter in the chapter routes through this roster. BE_0010_S2, the Olduvai

Deep-Time Fauna-Guardian, is a territorial spotted-hyena clan or a lone Cape buffalo, answered with

Earth Grip's restraining stone tendrils or a side-evade and split at a chokepoint, and the guardian

withdraws rather than being hunted [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]. The bonded Ethiopian wolf Desta is

never a target, and the roster's flamingo cohorts at the soda lakes stay ambient presences.

The gap this section carries is the exact counterpart of the flores page's strength, and naming it is

the point. Flores could build a readable-behaviour layer under its guardian encounter because four

region-scoped primary ecology papers sat behind it. This region has none: the corpus holds no

zoological source tagged to it, so nothing on this page states how a hyena clan holds ground, how a

buffalo commits to a charge, what a fish eagle's presence tells a watcher about a shoreline, or what

the wolf's altitude range actually is. The encounter therefore rests on the spine's verbs and the

combat system's own grammar, and the readable-behaviour layer is an acquisition target rather than an

invention. That is the same discipline in the opposite direction: cited-or-cut cuts here.

Deep-time fauna, carried from the RCM as the time-fluctuation encounter register: Pelorovis,

Sivatherium, and Hippopotamus gorgops are the named Pleistocene megafauna context for the fluctuation

windows [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10]. They are staged as real animals of a real past,

never as monsters, and their encounters sit inside the deep-time window rather than in the

era-present valley.

Familiar standing: no new bond at Ch 10. Shell (W1) reaches a canonical peak moment at CH10_B07 as

her pre-depletion frequency resonates with the geological vril concentration, and Desta (G3)

continues the Ch 9-10 bond as the highland-to-valley guide [SRC: T3_Familiars_Named # Shell] [SRC:

T3_Familiars_Named # Desta]. Folkloric beings route to Creature_Roster.folklore_attribution and are

carried from the spine and the chapter index rather than minted here: the //gauwasi, the Ju|'hoansi's

spirits of the dead who fire invisible arrows of sickness into the living, and //Gauwa, the lesser

god who sends them [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10]. Both are the tradition's own adversarial dead and

its own adversary-deity, faced as the healer faces them, and never trope-horror.

Both are now rowed at that routing target, and the /Xam Mantis of Section 5 is rowed beside them:

CR_0185 the //gauwasi, CR_0186 //Gauwa, and CR_0187 the Mantis, each attributed to its own people

[SRC: T0_Creature_Roster @ CR_0185] [SRC: T0_Creature_Roster @ CR_0186]

[SRC: T0_Creature_Roster @ CR_0187].

Section 4 — People and Culture

This is the section the whole page is built around, and it opens with the condition rather than

hiding it. Two separate classes of living community are depicted at Ch 10, and the processed corpus

holds nothing buildable for either: the Rift's own peoples return a flat zero, and the Southern-San

peoples return relay only.

The Rift's own living present is the Hadza of the Lake-Eyasi shore, the Sandawe of the Kondoa

country, and the Maasai of the valley floor and highlands, all three ratified into the chapter by the

D-12 hybrid resolution [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10]. A literal scan of every indexed substrate

chunk returns one occurrence of hadza (inside an encyclopedia of ancient Egypt), zero of sandawe,

zero of iraqw, zero of datoga, and one of kondoa (inside a Kilwa inventory catalogue). The same scan

returns nineteen hits on olduvai and twenty-six on maasai, so the machinery works and the zeros are

findings. There is no Hadza ethnography, no Sandawe ethnography, and no Rift pastoralist ethnography

in this corpus.

The Southern-San continuity stratum is the /Xam, the //Gwi, and the Ju|'hoansi. Here the corpus holds

exactly one primary record and it is a specific and limited one: Bleek and Lloyd's Specimens of

Bushman Folklore of 1911, the /Xam corpus collected in the Cape in the 1870s, printed as parallel

/Xam text and English translation and organized in two parts, mythology and fables and legends and

poetry, then history natural and personal [SRC: SRC_00265]. Everything the chapter stages as

Ju|'hoansi practice — the n/um vital force, the !kia trance, the healing dance, the //gauwasi and

//Gauwa — reaches this corpus only as thin relay, and the honest measure of it is worth stating

precisely, because the first pass of this page stated it too strongly and the correction is instructive.

The scan that produced the strong claim asked for nyae nyae, biesele, boiling energy as a work rather

than as a bibliography line, and every spelling of the Ju|'hoan people's own name. All of those

genuinely return zero, and they still do. What that scan did not ask for is the label this corpus

actually indexes these people under, which is the older exonym !Kung: it returns twenty chunks across

six source records. A scan for a people's material that omits the most-indexed label for them is a

search that cannot match reporting a zero, and it wrote a stronger absence into the first pass of this

page than the evidence supports. The label itself stays in the citation trail and never on a

player-facing surface; every surface on this page uses the people's own name.

What the twenty chunks actually hold is three relayed touches and nothing structural. A paper on

shamanism and cognitive evolution quotes Katz at one remove — that the Ju|'hoansi healers are shamans,

that the healer role carries its own term, and that practically all young men will eventually seek

n/um, the energy or medicine power that enables the practice, with some ceasing to seek it and others

not attaining it until their late thirties [SRC: SRC_00197, p. 27]. A geometric-cognition paper relays

that the medicine men say that in trance they see the animal linking them to the power

[SRC: SRC_00481, p. 15].

And Northover relays a trickster-god name for these people alongside the /Xam Mantis [SRC: SRC_00202,

p. 12] — recorded in this citation trail only, never carried to a glossary or a player-facing surface,

since it arrives relayed through Guenther and is not a term ratified canon supplies. Katz's Boiling

Energy itself

appears twice, both times as a bibliography line and never as content [SRC: SRC_00197] [SRC: SRC_00481].

That is the same register as the Marshall potency relay in Section 5 and it earns the same sentence:

it is enough to confirm that the spine's n/um treatment rests on real ethnography, and nowhere near

enough to build a healing dance, a four-step protocol, or a boss on. No practice detail, no dance

structure, and no healer-role term enters this page from those relays. The literature the spine names

(Marshall, Katz, Lee, Biesele) is still not indexed here as a work, and acquiring it stays this

region's highest-priority dependency.

What this page does with that is the discipline, and it has three parts.

First, the page consumes and does not extend. Every Ju|'hoansi and //gauwasi statement on this page

is carried verbatim from ratified canon — docs/spine/CH_10.md, BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0010, and

T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10 — cited as spine canon, and the page adds not one further claim about that

tradition. The same rule runs for the Hadza, the Sandawe and the Maasai: the spine's ratified lines

are carried, and nothing is added.

Second, the naming discipline. The rule is the one the bali page set: no unattested local word enters

living-tradition substrate, and a thing is carried descriptively until a source attests a term for

it. It bites unusually hard here for a reason worth recording. The Bleek-Lloyd digitization's OCR has

destroyed the /Xam click orthography — the vertical bar, the double bar, the double-cross and the

exclamation render as capital I, double-l, plus and j, so /Kaggen appears on the page as IKAGGEN and

the narrators' names arrive mangled [SRC: SRC_00265]. No /Xam word may therefore be transcribed from

this record into any player-facing string. The Mantis is carried descriptively as the mantis-formed

creator-and-trickster of the /Xam tradition; the one spelling this page uses at all is the form

already fixed in ratified canon at RR-12, and it is never re-derived from the scan. No Hadza word and

no Sandawe word appears anywhere on this page, because the corpus attests none.

Third, and most important, the living-fossil firewall. The defamatory trope this chapter is

structurally exposed to is the one that reads a living forager community as a surviving specimen of

the deep past — the same move that turns a present-tense people into a window onto someone else's

prehistory. Four things hold against it and they are design, not disclaimer.

meets the Hadza at CH10_B02, learns the Rift's own ground from them, and only afterward does the

deep-time current open at CH10_B04 [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]. The people are not the doorway; the

valley is.

Khoisan macro-family is rejected, any click affinity is areal and typological only and never a

kinship claim, and the Hadza are never framed as living fossils [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10].

are era-present, the Southern-San continuity is reached through a fluctuation current, and the two

are never narrated as one continuous people or one continuous practice.

block of San-tagged text in this corpus, at 456 chunks, is van der Post's The Lost World of the

Kalahari, whose whole frame is the vanishing-primal-people romance this rule exists to bar [SRC:

SRC_00283]. It is classed FRINGE-SKIP in Section 16 so that no later pass mistakes its volume for a

shelf, and nothing on this page derives from it.

The care posture, stated affirmatively. The Hadza, the Sandawe, the Maasai, the /Xam, the //Gwi and

the Ju|'hoansi are protected communities. Combat never routes through them; the healer role is

benevolent and inviolate throughout; the shamans and elders are teaching NPCs and never targets; the

rock-art continuity carries a role-title and never a personal name; and no deity-name sits on a

mortal NPC. Care means weight and authenticity rather than omission — and on this page the honest

form of weight is refusal to invent, because the material that would carry the weight is not here yet.

The modern strata this region touches, including colonial-era Kenya and the contemporary pressure on

Hadza and Sandawe land, are real history that belongs in the fluctuation windows and is routed

through the state and commercial apparatus, never through the communities themselves. None of it is

staged this pass, and the reason is the same: no source.

Builders of knowledge — the L2 civilizational-marks lane. Each mark below is carried from ratified

canon and credited to the people whose record attests it, with the evidence standing behind it stated

honestly.

T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10]. Evidence standing: the tool-tradition names and dates are RCM

no knapping sequence and no assemblage claim is authored here.

pharmacopoeia — carried as ratified canon [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10]. Evidence

standing, split because the two halves are not in the same condition. The healing tradition has

thin relay and no substance: three secondary sentences confirm that Katz's ethnography exists and

that the practice is real, and they carry no structure at all [SRC: SRC_00197, p. 27] [SRC:

SRC_00481, p. 15]. The pharmacopoeia has zero. Both are named here because the spine ratifies them

and both are flagged in Section 16 as the page's highest-priority acquisitions, because a

civilizational mark with a relay behind it and no work behind it is still a promise rather than a

credit.

its own stratum. Potassium-argon dating applied at Olduvai in 1961 first pushed the human timeline

back to at least 1.8 million years; the 1959 cranium found in the gorge was dated to 1.75 million

years by a newly developed radiometric method, and its reclassification was itself the science

working [SRC: SRC_00186, p. 12; p. 26; p. 33]. This mark is authorial and modern-strata. It is not

attributed to the era-present Hadza, Sandawe or Maasai, and its methods stay modern-strata rather

than pre-colonial player technology.

Section 5 — Spiritual Traditions and Occult

Cosmology, and the one place on this page where a primary record actually speaks. The /Xam corpus

Bleek and Lloyd assembled is a literature of a world in which the Mantis acts — assuming the form of

a hartebeest, fathering a son, moving through story after story — recorded from named narrators

working in the 1870s, several of whom explicitly gave their accounts from personal observation and

from their own mothers' telling [SRC: SRC_00265]. The corpus's second half, history natural and

personal, is the part a designer should read hardest: it holds hunting technique, weather, animal

behaviour and family practice recorded as knowledge rather than as myth, which is the shape this

game wants living tradition to have.

Two cautions ride that source and both are recorded rather than worked around. The OCR damage to the

click orthography is total, so the corpus is readable as English translation and unusable as an

orthographic source (Section 4's naming discipline). And the volume is a colonial-era collection whose

title uses the exonym this project has dropped; the material is the /Xam narrators' own and is

credited to them, while the book's framing vocabulary stays in the citation trail and never on a

player-facing surface.

The interpretive layer. The neuropsychological reading of rock art — that the geometric forms in the

imagery correspond to what a mind generates in altered states — is the frame the spine builds Thread

13 and Thread 17 on, and the corpus holds it in its most useful possible form: a peer-review

symposium in which the model is argued over by name. The commentary credits the model with making

sense of recurring features easily missed by a non-discerning eye, in Europe and in Africa and in

North America alike, and it also carries the substantive objections — that the model explains the

production of the images without explaining their reception, that the shared imagery may be a

selective mirror of a known environment rather than an altered-state signature, and that

chronological sequences in some regions show the geometric forms clustering early rather than running

throughout [SRC: SRC_00215]. The RCM's own instruction is to treat the model as academically

contested and to use the contestation as content, and this is exactly the material that lets that

happen: the panel can be read two ways in-world, and both readings are honest.

Potency, the concept under the whole chapter, is anchored once and relayed. The southern-African

notion of a spiritual potency is recorded as a force that is unpersonified, incorporeal, immaterial

and invisible — Lorna Marshall's words, reached on this page through Mguni's Termites of the Gods and

Northover's chapter rather than from Marshall directly [SRC: SRC_00202]. That is the single thread in

this corpus that touches the Ju|'hoansi ethnography at all, and it is one relayed sentence. It is

enough to ground the vril parallel and nowhere near enough to build a healing dance on, and the page

says so rather than letting one quotation stand in for a literature.

One interior register of that same source is declared and not carried. Northover's chapter reads

prehistoric spirituality through Bataille's eroticism alongside Lewis-Williams, and argues a possible

sexual basis for the potency concept [SRC: SRC_00202]. That is a philosopher's argument about

prehistoric art in general; it is not a claim about how living San peoples understand n/um, and it

does not enter this game's portrayal of any living tradition. It is recorded here so that a later

pass reading the same chunks knows the line was drawn deliberately.

The named beings, each in its own tradition's category and under its own name, all carried from

ratified canon rather than minted here:

and fire invisible arrows of sickness into the living to pull them toward death [SRC:

T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10]. The chapter's whole adversary, and the tradition's own: they are what the

n/um healer has always fought, and they are never confused with the revered echo or with the

ancestors as venerated

cosmology [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10]

cited and never staged as a combat presence and never placed on a mortal NPC [SRC:

T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10] [SRC: SRC_00265]

healer sees and drives back the dead [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10]

A false-friend warning is recorded here because it is the exact class of error this page exists to

prevent. The /Xam text in Bleek and Lloyd carries a word the OCR renders as ggauwa, in contexts that

include a man going faint in the sun's heat and a hunter reading a springbok's condition [SRC:

SRC_00265]. It sits five times in that corpus and it is not the Ju|'hoan //gauwasi. Nothing on this

page or downstream of it may treat the two as the same word, the same being, or evidence for one

another: that would be a cross-people conflation manufactured out of an OCR artifact, and it would

travel forward as canon if it were not stopped here.

Ritual practice and spiritual leadership. Kxao's role is the benevolent knowledge-holder throughout —

he reads the world through the trance, leads the dance against the //gauwasi, senses an unusual

concentration of n/um in the protagonist and asks nothing about it. //Kushe holds the arrow-poison

pharmacopoeia and Debe reads the ground; all three are teaching NPCs and none is ever a target [SRC:

docs/spine/CH_10.md]. No School_Registry candidate is proposed from this region: schools begin at Ch

15, and proposing a school from a tradition this corpus does not attest would be exactly the

invention this page refuses.

Occult connections and player rabbit holes: the anti-fringe corrective is authorial only and never a

player debunk. Three at-risk readings are barred by name. The marks are not a lost super-science and

not a signal from anywhere: they are documented human art and cognition, and the vril substrate under

them is Layer 3 and is never declared [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10]. The Olduvai strata are

documented paleoanthropology and hold no young-earth or lost-advanced-civilization reading. And the

deep-time resonance between the oldest tools and the oldest marks is a resonance the chapter feels,

never a claim that one tradition taught another anything — the region's marks are the achievement of

the peoples who made them.

Section 6 — Weapons Military and Conflict

Era weapons: none anchored. T0_Weapon_Registry.canonical_chapter_acquisition anchors no weapon at Ch

10 — the Brute chapter-anchored slot for the Ch 9-10 window was spent at Ch 9 — and the page mints

nothing to fill the space [SRC: T0_Weapon_Registry]. The bow the spine names at the Eyasi shore is

carried as spine canon and takes no WPN_ row and no draw-weight, material, or technique claim,

because none is attested.

Military organization and warrior culture: there is none at region scale, and that is a fact about

the chapter rather than a gap. Ch 10 carries no antagonist operative, no faction, no war and no

raid. The single combat encounter is a territorial animal that withdraws rather than dying, the main

encounter is a perception protocol in which damage is impossible by design, and the third is a trial

against the self [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]. The required playable layer is the environmental

perception boss, and combat absence is never the answer [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0051].

The Maasai age-set register is present and is handled as social structure rather than as martial

content: Lemayian is a moran and Naserian a shepherd, and the pair is staged as an age-set contrast

inside a living pastoral present [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0072] [SRC: T0_Character_Index @

CHAR_0077]. No weapon, ceremony, initiation or ordeal is authored for either, because the corpus

attests none, and the moran is never reduced to a warrior costume.

Documented conflict, recorded as a pointer with its care terms bound rather than staged this pass:

the twentieth-century colonial history of Kenya, including the counterinsurgency campaign of

1952-1960, surfaces in this region's one source only as a bibliography entry and carries no content

[SRC: SRC_00186, p. 98]. It is named here so the region's honest historical weight is not silently

dropped. When it is built it is reached through a fluctuation window, routed through the colonial

state and its apparatus, never through the Kikuyu, Maasai, Hadza or Sandawe communities, and never

staged as a campaign the player wins.

SQ2 military_history takes no stage at this chapter; the chapter's ratified side-questlines are SQ3,

SQ10 and SQ1.

Section 7 — Architecture and Engineering

REAL cultural architecture is reference-built, never raw-generated; generation is sanctioned for

fantastical and vril structures only. This region carries almost no built environment, and the shape

of what it does carry is the point.

The region's engineering achievement is the toolmaking itself. The Oldowan and Acheulean traditions

are the chapter's foundational engineering set-piece and the origin of made things, and the

Engineering trade substrate seeds from them below any home base [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch

10]. Because no typological source is in the corpus, the set-piece is built as the ACT rather than as

a catalogue: a knapping surface, a core, a struck flake, and the plain fact that a shaped edge is a

decision — with the tool-tradition names, dates and sequence carried from RCM canon and no assemblage

or technique claim authored on top of them.

The gorge itself is the region's readable structure. Stacked beds cut by a ravine are a stratigraphic

section, and the chapter's agility course is a descent through it — a deep-cut vertical-and-scramble

course biome-rotated against the Ch-9 rock-hewn church descent, with an entoptic-pattern puzzle

variant [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]. That is architecture read rather than built, and it is the honest

form for this region.

The panels and the shelter are protected sacred art. They are reference-built as type-accurate

composition and never reproduced as high-poly replicas of actual documented panels, they are restored

rather than desecrated in the fiction, and no registered or protected cultural property is

reproduced [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0007]. The Ju|'hoansi camp and its dance-fire ground are living

domestic space and are built with the same restraint: a place people live, never a diorama.

Section 8 — Politics Territories and Faction Relationships

Political structure: none at region scale, and this is the arc's one chapter where that is the whole

design. There is no state, no faction apparatus, no broker, and no antagonist operative; Thread 3 is

NOT_PRESENT and the environmental boss stands in the operative's place [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md].

After a run of chapters spent hiding among people, the valley's political fact is that there is

no one to hide from.

Five-Factors relationship table (per presence) — path language uses the ratified fork vocabulary,

options are ACTION-keyed with direction generative, neutral or corrosive, and bands are DERIVED and

never option labels:

standing on arrival open-and-unbothered, since the protagonist arrives as a stranger and not as a

problem; improve by learning the ground on its own terms; questline none assigned — the beat is

character, not transaction

impact light; standing on arrival neutral; improve by travelling with the herd rather than through

it; questline none assigned

stratum; player impact set by how the protocol is carried; standing on arrival welcoming and

incurious about what the protagonist is; improve through the discipline itself; questline SQ1, and

the teaching thread that opens toward Ch 13 and Ch 41

never engaged; player impact none; standing not applicable; never combat targets, which

is the real-person office rule this page already states (the archetype supplies the

OFFICE and never the person) and not a clause of HL_0109 [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @

HL_0001] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0109]

standing adversarial by the tradition's own account; improve not applicable — they are driven back,

never negotiated with, and never befriended

Territories: the chapter's only contested ground is a rock face, and what is contested about it is

whether an old brightness survives. Wars with the player's role: none.

Section 9 — Minerals Resources and Trade Goods

Ochre and iron-oxide pigment is the region's canonical resource and the one that travels. It carries

Thread 22 forward and it is genuinely anchored, if thinly: the engraved ochre from Blombos is named

in the corpus as the earliest explicitly symbolic representation the African record shows [SRC:

SRC_00215]. The pigment-craft substrate seeds from it below any home base [SRC:

T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10].

The gorge's own material is stone, and it is stone with a specific job: the toolstone the Oldowan and

Acheulean traditions worked, and the volcanic tuff and sediment that make the section faces readable.

The RCM carries the Bed I through Bed V stratigraphy that the descent reads [SRC:

T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10]. No sourcing-geology claim — which outcrops supplied which

toolstone, over what distances — is authored here, because the corpus attests none and that particular

claim is exactly the kind that later gets quoted as canon.

The soda basins are the region's other distinctive material. Their chemistry is what makes Bogoria's

shallows read the way they do and is the reason the lake chain is visually two different waters at

once; the specific mineral inventory is page-authored general geology, is flagged as such, and feeds

no trade table until it is anchored.

Trade goods, routes, currency, markets: none at region scale. No trade home base roots here, no

market is staged, and the region's economy in the fiction is what a valley provides directly [SRC:

T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10]. Blacksmithing and metallurgy are absent from every stratum this

chapter plays.

Section 10 — Music Sound and Composition Brief

Documented instruments: none attested in this corpus, and the section says so before it says anything

else. The chapter's musical content is the Ju|'hoansi healing-dance clapping and the women's

song-line rising at the n/um dance, carried from ratified canon at reference register [SRC:

docs/spine/CH_10.md]. No protected sacred music is reproduced, sampled, transcribed or notated, and

the reference register means a composed cue that honours the shape of the practice, never a recording

or a reconstruction of it. Because no musicological source is in the corpus, no rhythmic structure,

scale, call pattern or instrument is described anywhere on this page.

Composition briefs per track type, each cue carrying its adaptive-class tag for Music Step 4

stem-splitting:

the vril-state steadies {adaptive}

horror: pressure without menace-scoring, resolving into the old brightness on the win {adaptive}

Sound design: gorge, rock-panel, dance-fire, savanna and soda-lake terrain enum; deep-time wind, lake

ambient and the clap-and-song bed; the vril-cast tier for the //gauwasi ward and the four-step

protocol; inscription-activation at the entoptic-panel read [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]. Voice and

audio tiering: bulk ambient lines route to the local no-clone tier; the named teaching voices route to

the clone-authorized tier behind the §4.4.1 gate. Substrate-confidence flag, echoed from Section 16 so

the audio batch audit sees it here: this entire music brief rests on zero substrate and is a design

proposal until the acquisition lands.

Machine cue table (generated -- do NOT hand-edit)

Emitted by harness/emit_music_cues.py from the spine beat graph, this page's Zone Catalog, T0_SFX_Registry and T0_Theme_Registry. The composition briefs above stay prose because a composer reads prose; these rows are what the build consumes. Re-emit rather than edit.

Reading bed_source and licence_class together: sonniss_landed rows are direct use of a landed Sonniss file, and the Sonniss bundle licence prohibits use as training data -- no Sonniss file is ever a fine-tune corpus, a LoRA corpus, or an audio conditioning input for any generator. ace_step_worklist rows are generated beds (ACE-Step-1.5-XL-SFT, MIT) and must not be derived from any Sonniss row; each produced bed records its generating model and licence in T0_SFX_Registry.generation_licence_ref. composed_work rows are the composer-in-loop lane. The constraint travels on the row because this block is the surface that reaches canon.

layer_mode: base is the melodic statement a swap layer REPLACES -- layers are interchangeable, never additive, so the melody is present at every intensity. ambience_stack is the single declared exemption and it carries no melodic material.

Section 11 — Velheim Family Presence

None. This is a canon fact rather than an omission and it is the strongest one in the chapter: Thread

3 is NOT_PRESENT at Ch 10, ruled at batch-1 #10, and no operative row, institutional form, family

name or pattern anchors here [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]. The page surfaces no antagonist pattern of

any kind, and the reveal authority is dark. What the protagonist feels at the oldest serpent-mark is

wordless and unnumbered — a sense that something very old was never reached — and it is carried on

this page exactly as the spine carries it, as a felt Layer-3 absence and never as a pattern shown to

the player.

Section 12 — All Characters Full Entries

The protagonist's path through the region references the spine and never duplicates it: the descent

into the gorge, the Hadza shore, the stratigraphic hold against the fauna guardian, the teachers at

the dance-fire, the lesser panel, the Bale threshold, the dimming main panel and the four-step

protocol, the oldest serpent-mark, and the climb back out [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]. NPCs are

MetaHuman-first; each entry carries the persona fields per the entity-persona system.

The region's named cast, consumed from T0_Character_Index; personas FEED at the build pass:

who names the trouble before the protagonist can and leads the dance; senses an unusual n/um

concentration without ever recognizing what the protagonist is; opens the teaching thread to Ch 13

and Ch 41; inviolate, never a target

Herbalism substrate; inviolate, never a target

never a target

Two persona rules bind the whole cast and are stated once at section grain because both are §17.1

lines rather than style notes.

The first is that no real person becomes a character. Dr. Amara Obi's registry role names a real

twentieth-century archaeologist as its archetype, and what the archetype supplies is the OFFICE — a

woman archaeologist directing excavation in the gorge, working a section face with a trowel and a

notebook — and never the person. No biography, no family, no named discovery and no dated find is

ported onto her; the real excavation history stays where Section 4 puts it, authorial and cited. The

same rule runs for the /Xam narrators whose voices carry the Bleek-Lloyd corpus: they are named in the

citation trail as the authors of that literature and their names never sit on an NPC [SRC: SRC_00265].

The second is that this region's personas are built from role rather than from ethnography, and the

page says so on the face of each one instead of letting authored material read as record. With no

ethnographic source in the corpus, there are no documented customary offices to render here the way

the flores page could render a mosalaki or a measurer. What the page offers instead is the persona

LANE for each role the spine already names, marked authored throughout, with the instruction that

each lane is re-grounded against a primary source before it reaches dialogue:

times and is not impressed by it; unhurried; asks less than he could; names the trouble plainly

because naming it is the first step of the work. Three-path surface: hold the discipline through

the whole protocol (generative), lift the shadow imperfectly (generative, lighter), reach for force

where none was possible (corrosive). Never gating: every direction plays through to the exit

embarrassment but a death, and whose teaching manner is therefore precise rather than warm.

Authored entirely; the pharmacopoeia's content waits on acquisition

is the first the player earns without saying anything

head and one with a reputation still to make; the pair is a living present in dialogue with itself,

never a costume contrast

and a guide who knows this ground as home and as a job at once. Both are documented-history figures,

seen and never engaged, and never combat targets

Section 13 — Quest Framework, All Questline Types

Beat structure, fork shapes, SQ stages and gates, and spatial requirements COME FROM the spine's typed

graph. The page adds region-scope dressing and the side-quest seeds. Quest typing is owned by this

step, and the honest result of running it here is that none of the seeds below fits one of the five

attested quest_type values, so each stays untyped and carries the category-mint flag rather than a

force-fit.

Main Story: descend into the oldest valley; meet the Hadza of the Eyasi shore as a living present;

hold the stratigraphic descent against the fauna guardian; reach the teachers at the dance-fire

through the deep-time current; read the entoptic patterns at the lesser panel; cross the Bale

threshold alone; stand at the dimming main panel while the healer names the //gauwasi, and carry the

four-step protocol — perceive, boil the inner heat and hold it, withhold every violent impulse, and

lift the shadow away; feel at the oldest serpent-mark that the marks are part of something larger;

climb back out [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md].

Threads: Thread 1 (the geological accumulation of the vital force), 2 (the oldest serpent imagery in

the arc), 4 (the African Humid Period as the flood thread's first dated catastrophe), 12 (the healing

dance as oracle and as confrontation), 13 (the geometric repertoire), 16 (the trance tradition), 17

(marks deeper than writing), and 22 (the ochre tradition, advancing at chapter-ambient level with no

single carrier beat). Thread 3 is NOT_PRESENT.

Side-questlines: SQ3 archaeology_inscription_occult ADVANCE, SQ10 anomalous_phenomena ADVANCE, SQ1

fairy_tale_folklore ADVANCE.

Quest-seed ledger standing, declared rather than faked: the seed-housing ledger returns zero matches

for region_ids rift_valley and slug olduvai_human_origins. No seed has been placed here by any prior

pass, and the seeds below are this page's first.

Region-scope side-quest seeds. Every one is drawn from the spine's own typed layer or from the one

cited source this region has, because a seed invented out of an absent ethnography is precisely the

defect this page exists to avoid. Each is opt-in and non-gating.

the beds are in order and the order is the information; the player who works out that the lower band

is the older one gains a route the direct climber does not. NPC none; integrity implication none;

reward the deep-time read and the SQ3 lore. It grounds on the gorge's stacked-bed structure and the

RCM's Bed I through Bed V [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 10]

genuinely forgiving, and the player who does it learns two of the four steps before they cost

anything; the player who skips straight to the main panel meets all four at once. Integrity

implication none; reward the protocol rehearsal. It is the spine's own BE_0010_S1 offered as a

choice rather than a corridor [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]

and reading instances rather than by being told, and the completed catalogue is what makes the Ch-13

panels legible on sight; integrity implication none; reward the catalogue itself and the forward

read (LINK_0079). The catalogue is a collection loop over ratified content, and it asserts nothing

about what any real panel means

outsider scholarship's, and the corpus holds the scholarly argument itself with its objections

intact [SRC: SRC_00215]; the player can pursue either, and neither is scored as correct. Integrity

implication: how the player carries a tradition's own account when a competing frame is available;

reward the contested-model lore. This is the RCM's instruction to use the contestation as content,

built as a quest rather than as a codex entry

result, because the number is what the method allows and the method was new; the player who watches

long enough sees a reclassification happen [SRC: SRC_00186, p. 12; p. 33]. Integrity implication

none; reward the science-as-process read. It is staged as observation only, since these figures are

documented history and are never engaged

paces the climb and holds the breath-state arrives steadier than one who rushes it; integrity

implication none; reward the astral-register fragment and an easier threshold. It is BE_0010_S3's

approach given weight

Mini-arc situations, the Layer-1 through Layer-3 lane:

concealment, the mechanics that manage exposure simply stop mattering for a while, and the player

feels the pressure lift before any line of dialogue mentions it. It is the chapter's rest, and the

design instruction is that it is felt through system behaviour rather than stated

design rule is that this beat contains no transaction: nothing is unlocked, nothing is traded, and

the reward is that the valley stops being empty. This is the beat the living-fossil firewall is

built to protect, and the surest protection is that these are people the protagonist learns FROM

before the deep-time door opens at all [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]

discouraged but impossible, and the player's whole agency is perception, steadiness and restraint.

The situation is that a player trained for eight chapters to solve things with force meets a thing

force cannot touch, and the healer is standing right there doing it correctly

wall rather than on a meter. It is the chapter's stakes made environmental

L1 fun-beat seed: the stratigraphic descent course itself, run as an opt-in timed ladder rung with a

puzzle variant, offered and never forced [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0079].

Folklore-combat lane: the //gauwasi encounter is the lane's whole content at this chapter and it is

already typed at the spine. No further folklore-combat encounter is seeded here, because seeding one

would require folklore this corpus does not hold.

Convergence-node feed notes: FORK_CH10_A writes no mark; its differentiated consequence routes

through ws.community_state_per_region and is read by the Ch 59-65 continental-revisit renderer [SRC:

T0_Worldstate_Variables @ WS_019]. path_bucket is UNLOCKED; the lock is far ahead at Ch 65.

Section 14 — Trade Skills, Detailed Content

Home-base trade content: none roots here. The region is a single-chapter descent, not a returnable

home, and the spine states plainly that both trade surfaces at Ch 10 are substrate seeds below their

home bases [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md].

acquisition rather than a page section. Nothing is authored: no species, no preparation, no

application, no effect. What the page CAN specify is the learning register the trade would take

here, and it specifies it as a shape rather than as content — a body of knowledge taught by a keeper

to a person standing next to her, where the transmission is the relationship and the error margin is

the reason for the exactness. The moment a primary source lands, that shape takes real material

engraved-ochre record [SRC: SRC_00215]. Pigment-craft is not one of the ten rowed trades and this

page mints no eleventh: the gatherable is ochre, the craft is grinding and preparation, and the

substrate's honest consumer is Trade 9 Inscription, whose own homes sit far ahead at Ch 15 and Ch 29

and whose Ch-10 tie is the pair of pre-alphabetic script rows this chapter anchors — the entoptic

rock-art register and the engraved-ochre proto-symbolic register [SRC: T0_Language_Script_Registry @

SAN_ENTOPTIC_ROCK_ART] [SRC: T0_Language_Script_Registry @ BLOMBOS_PROTO_SYMBOLIC]. The forward

payoff is the Drakensberg palette and again the Tassili wall

rather than as a typology (Section 7); the trade's own home is far ahead at Ch 27

Gathering loop: deep-valley foraging, ochre and pigment collection, and the arrow-poison botanicals

are the spine's three named gathering surfaces [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]. Two of the three are

buildable now; the third waits on the acquisition, and the page does not fill it with a plausible

substitute.

The ritual and technical vocabulary this region introduces — n/um, !kia, //gauwasi, //Gauwa, and the

/Xam Mantis — takes Section-17 glossary entries so localization does not flatten them, and every one

of them arrives from ratified canon rather than from this page.

Section 15 — Cross-Regional Connections

Connections to visited and forward regions, each naming its Cross_Cultural_Link_Graph row. Eight edges

originate at this chapter. Reciprocation discipline binds: each claimed link is reciprocated at its

target, and a page-side claim without a reciprocal target row is a defect.

resolves far later at adult inscription mastery, and Kxao himself reappears at Ch 13 as a teacher —

The chapter's own forward feeling is the one connection with no LINK row and that is correct: what

the protagonist senses at the serpent-mark is an unnumbered pre-hunt partial-read, a sense that a

coordinate system exists rather than a coordinate, and the numbered hunt begins at Ch 41 [SRC:

docs/spine/CH_10.md]. Nothing on this page names, numbers or explains it.

One connection is deliberately NOT minted, and the reason is recorded so it is not proposed again.

The /Xam corpus's ggauwa and the Ju|'hoan //gauwasi are not a link (Section 5). No

Cross_Cultural_Link_Graph row may be built on an OCR artifact.

Section 16 — Academic References and Books to Acquire

Every citation carries its use_class (SUBSTRATE · ESOTERIC-PRIMARY · AUTHORIAL-REBUTTAL · REFERENCE ·

TONE · DUPLICATE · FRINGE-SKIP). Substrate citations arrive via the query layer, region-filtered

(query_substrate --region rift_valley); the retrieval-provenance trail rides the page.

The shelf, stated before the list

The region filter expands rift_valley to exactly one gazetteer slug, olduvai_human_origins, and that

slug holds 210 chunks across three source records. One of the three is a compiled popular biography of

a twentieth-century archaeologist; the other two are the Homo floresiensis papers from Liang Bua,

which carry the Rift tag only because their subject matter trips the human-origins keyword set and

which were already spent on the flores_island page. So the honest count of Rift-scoped sources on this

shelf is ONE, and it is not an archaeology monograph. The retrieval trail is recorded with its exact

query strings, because a provenance trail that cannot be re-run is not provenance. A bare Olduvai

Gorge query against the region-filtered substrate returns 0.6386 at rank 1 and 0.597 at rank 2, and

all four top hits are the same Leakey biography, two of them its own bibliography pages. Widening the

query to Olduvai Gorge stratigraphy and early stone tools returns 0.7086 at rank 1, the same book

again at ranks 2 and 3, and by rank 4 the shelf has run out: the score falls to 0.51 on one of the

Flores papers about Liang Bua. A shelf whose fourth-best answer to its own core subject is a paper

from another continent is a shelf with a single relevant book on it.

The Southern-San material this chapter also needs sits under a different slug, san_khoisan, which the

query layer maps to the region_id south_africa and therefore to Ch 13. This page reaches it as a

declared CROSS-REGION reach rather than by widening its own filter, exactly as the flores page reached

a Keo source for a Manggarai institution and said so on the face of the citation. The reach is

legitimate because the material genuinely belongs to this chapter — the spine reaches the Southern-San

continuity through a deep-time current at Ch 10 and pays it off at Ch 13 — and it is declared because

an undeclared cross-region citation is how a region page silently annexes another region's evidence.

Processed substrate (in the corpus now)

Section 1's Olduvai geography and Section 4's excavation-history mark. It is a multi-author compiled

popular biography whose chapters carry named student authors and whose claims are relayed from

secondary literature (Morell, Meredith, Morton and others), so it is a low-tier witness and is

classed accordingly. It is genuinely useful for what it is: the gorge's location on the eastern

Serengeti margin, the 1961 potassium-argon result, the 1959 cranium and its 1.75-million-year date,

the reclassification that followed, and the Turkana and Koobi Fora extensions of the same programme

The acquisition brief — the load-bearing part of this page

This region is the thinnest in the belt and the acquisition list is not a wish-list, it is a schedule

dependency. Ranked by what is blocked:

Energy; Biesele; Lee. HIGHEST PRIORITY. This blocks the chapter's main boss, its four-step protocol,

its healing-dance content, its arrow-poison trade seed, and its Thread 12 and Thread 16 anchors —

everything currently carried on spine authority with three relayed secondary sentences behind it and

no work. The ranking is unchanged by those relays; if anything they sharpen it, because they confirm

the ethnography the page cannot reach exists and says exactly what the spine assumes.

Verify list, with the second-pass corrections carried on its face. Every zero recorded on this page was

positive-controlled on the same literal scan of all 661,081 indexed substrate chunks that returned

non-zero results for olduvai at nineteen, maasai at twenty-six, and entoptic, mantis and blombos, so a

zero here is a finding rather than a failed query. The zeros that hold are diamphidia, the hyphenated

arrow-poison, sandawe, iraqw, datoga, honeyguide, oldowan, nyae nyae, biesele, and every spelling of

the Ju|'hoan people's own name. Three counts were added on the second pass and two of them changed a

claim on this page.

pharmacopoeia content; Section 2 now carries the four with their sources rather than a zero.

indexes these people under. Section 4's absence claim is restated on that evidence. Thirteen of the

twenty sit in the DUPLICATE record of the 1911 collection declared above, which means that record

still holds people-material no pass has read; it is a re-read target rather than a new source, since

a duplicate is the same evidence counted twice.

returns one. Both are recorded here as scan results in the citation trail. Neither enters the

Section-17 glossary or any player-facing surface, because neither is a term ratified canon supplies.

The lesson is recorded because it is cheap here and expensive later: a scan that omits a corpus's own

index label for a people cannot match, and a search that cannot match reports zero. Any later pass

extending this page's absence claims asks for the exonyms and the older spellings as well as the

people's own names, and keeps the people's own names on every surface.

Rabbit holes (minimum five): the potassium-argon dating chain at Olduvai and what

a date actually rests on; the entoptic model's twenty-year argument and its critics; the African Humid

Period lake-level record; the /Xam corpus's second half as a natural-history document; and the

question of what a shaped edge means, which is the oldest design question there is.

Section 17 — Unreal Engine 5.8 Build Specifications

Environment areas, interiors, vegetation palette, NPC population and behaviour, performance budget —

re-pointed to the researched UE-5.8 chain. Registry data lands as DataTables (one C++ USTRUCT per

registry: the Zone Catalog, the boss thin-index, the creature roster rows). PCG consumes the Zone

Catalog and DataTables to scatter savanna, thorn scrub and Afromontane heath. The Landscape import

runs the Python path over the Section-1 DEM tiles, with the gorge section faces and the shelter apron

carried as scripted composites rather than as PCG output, because their readability is the gameplay.

Scene rows drive Sequencer. The three-seam routing governs which agent surface executes which step.

MetaHuman batch generation round-trips Epic's cloud for the named cast. ws.* worldstate keys bind to

the save subsystem.

Two build constraints are specific to this region and are stated here rather than discovered at the

terrain pass. The protected type-sites — real documented rock-art panels and the living camp — are

referenced set-dressing and type-accurate composition, never high-poly reproductions of actual

protected cultural property. And the two continuity-stratum zones carry no real-world georeference by

decision (see the Zone Catalog note), so their landscape is authored composition rather than DEM

import, and the terrain tooling must not try to fetch tiles for them.

Localization-ready discipline binds from the first page: every player-facing string lands in string

tables, never hard-coded. The glossary carries n/um, !kia, //gauwasi and //Gauwa under the Ju|'hoansi

name, and the Mantis under the /Xam name, each with a meaning-carrying gloss surfaced on first

introduction so the term reads as a word with a sense rather than as an opaque label — the natural-voice

requirement, not a footnote. Three glossary rules are specific to this region. Click characters are

part of the spelling and are never silently normalized away by a font fallback or an ASCII pipeline;

the terms carried are exactly the ones ratified canon supplies and no further term is minted; and no

Hadza or Sandawe term enters the glossary at all until a source attests it. A player-strings sidecar

for this chapter does not yet exist — docs/spine/player_strings/ carries CH_02 through CH_05 — and its

creation is a FEED from this page.

Performance budget: platform-tiered frame-rate and triangle and draw-call budgets; LODs on the savanna

foliage and the section-face composites; World Partition streaming across the gorge run, the plain

margin and the compressed lake corridor, which is the longest single traversal band this region carries.

Section 18 — Time Period and Fluctuation Design

Time display and fluctuation events: this region's composite era is the most stratified in the arc so

far, and the ORDER in which the strata open is a care rule rather than a pacing choice.

Eyasi shore, the Maasai on the floor and in the highlands, a valley with people living in it now

anchor [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10]

not the present-day Rift [SRC: docs/spine/CH_10.md]

seen and never engaged

The care rule that governs the whole design: the living-present stratum opens FIRST and is never

entered THROUGH the deep-time one. A player must never be able to walk from a hominin stratum

directly into a living camp, because that transition is the living-fossil equation built as a level.

The valley is the door in both directions; the people never are.

Switching mechanics: per the Geography time-fluctuation model, this is an early node, so switching is

site-cued — the gorge floor, the panel gallery, the Bale bench — rather than the free travel of the

late arc.

Section 19 — World State Versions, Modern Revisit

After Vimana activation the player revisits the world from the air and sees the integrity-mapped

world states. This region's revisit is the Ch 59-65 continental-revisit window, which is the

registry-named consumer of ws.community_state_per_region for rift_valley [SRC: T0_Worldstate_Variables

@ WS_019].

The DERIVED texture bands are {Truly Good · Good Enough · Drifting · Evil · Pure Evil (terminal)}; the

world-state NAMES are {Luminous · Restored · Neutral · Damaged · Corrupted}; endings resolve by the

Ch-65-locked path_bucket {TRULY_GOOD, GOOD_ENOUGH, EVIL}. At Ch 10 the region initializes at integrity

L3 Drifting with world-state WS3 and path_bucket UNLOCKED.

Visual differences per state at the revisit read entirely off one thing: whether the old brightness is

still on the wall. Where the protocol held, the panel the player stood at is whole, and the teaching

thread that opened here arrives at Ch 41 at fuller resonance. Where the shadow was strengthened, the

//gauwasi return as content at the revisit and the panel carries the loss. Nothing about this read is

a gate: recognition and lore open or alter, never a wall. Antagonist presence per state: none surfaced

at this region, which is itself the Layer-3 fact the chapter is quietly about and which the player is

never shown as a pattern.

Section 20 — Session Planning and Source Guide

Per-region population plan, which staged sources feed which sessions:

[SRC: SRC_00186], and takes the Olduvai and Turkana acquisitions as its real target

[SRC: SRC_00265], with the OCR and exonym handling from this section's own rules

[SRC: SRC_00215] [SRC: SRC_00202], and its output is the two-readings quest rather than a codex

Sandawe and Ju|'hoansi acquisitions land; scheduling them now would produce invented ethnography,

which is the one output this region cannot afford

Processing status against the book pipeline: three sources are processed and query-ready under

region_tags olduvai_human_origins, of which one is genuinely Rift-scoped; the Southern-San sources are

processed under region_tags san_khoisan and are reached here as declared cross-region citations. The

cross-cutting sources are reached by unfiltered pass and govern nothing.

Two pipeline FEEDS leave this page. The gazetteer's olduvai_human_origins keyword set matches on

hominin and human origins, which is why two Indonesian papers landed on the Rift shelf; a keyword

tightening or a per-book override is the fix, and it is recorded here rather than worked around. And

the region-to-slug map gives rift_valley exactly one slug while the chapter genuinely needs a second

body of material that lives under another region's slug — the cross-region declaration on this page is

the honest interim, and whether Ch 10's Southern-San reach deserves a mapped second slug is a query-layer

ruling this page surfaces rather than makes.

Build-ready date: the machine layer — the Zone Catalog, the Derived Indexes, and every join into the

typed spine — is build-ready NOW against the v3.1 spine, and the greybox can be built from it. The

CULTURAL layer is not build-ready and will not be until the acquisition brief's first two lines land.

That is this page's headline finding and the reason it exists: of the region pages in the belt, this

is the one where the schedule risk is real, and it is a research risk rather than an authoring one.
